Washburn women's soccer wins again, punches ticket to Division II national championship

The Washburn women’s soccer team has taken the next in their historic season after defeating Adelphi 1-0 in the NCAA Division II national tournament semifinal on Thursday.

The Ichabods (20-3-1) were dominant throughout as they controlled the ball and peppered the Panthers goal seemingly all game long in Matthews, North Carolina. The breakthrough for Washburn came in the 56th minute when Khloe Schuckman drilled a long-distance shot towards the goal.

The ball was saved from the Adelphi keeper and fell perfectly to Mackinly Rohn’s foot at the back post. Rohn followed the shot and was able to tap in the goal to give Washburn the lead and eventual victory.

Washburn has not won a national championship in any sport since 2005 when the women’s basketball team secured the ultimate crown.

The No 3-seeded Ichabods will play No. 4 Point Loma (16-3-1) for the national championship at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Sea Lions have not allowed a goal in the postseason tournament and won their semifinal 3-0 over top-seeded Florida Tech.

Meanwhile, The Ichabods have won all five of their tournament games by a one goal difference as if they have found comfort in close games.

Washburn has not won a national championship in any sport since 2005 when the women’s basketball team secured the ultimate crown.
