Warriors were pursuing reunion with JaVale McGee
The Golden State Warriors need additional size on their roster.
Dario Saric and Trayce Jackson-Davis, both 6 feet, 10 inches, are the two tallest members of the Warriors roster. As such, it should come as no surprise that Golden State registered interest in reuniting with former champion JaVale McGee after the Dallas Mavericks waived him, as The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported.
McGee signed with the Sacramento Kings instead. With three rings to his name, McGee might have chosen to join the Kings in search of a bigger role. Nevertheless, Sacramento’s recent improvements will certainly have aided the Kings’ pursuit of McGee, who is still an impact rim-runner at the age of 35.
“Known commodity JaVale McGee was a nice late-offseason addition for the Kings (especially considering they won his services over the pursuing Warriors),” Amick wrote. “The state of his 36-year-old game (beyond this recent highlight reel) remains to be seen, but I’m told the Kings’ optimistic plan would be for him to play a significant role.”
After missing on McGee, Golden State will likely deploy multiple small-ball lineups in the coming season. With so many elite-level guards and wings, Stever Kerr can get creative with his lineups and substitution patterns.
The Warriors still have two open roster spots as they head into training camp. As such, there is a chance Mike Dunleavy and the front office add size to the roster if they believe the player is a good fit and can make an impact.
