Tulare County Athlete of the Week: Tulare Western's Avery Starr

Tulare Western volleyball player Avery Starr was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County high school athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on Aug. 25, Starr received 2,522 votes, or a 33.5% majority, of the 7,547 responses.

Starr tallied 13 digs, 12 kills, and three blocks to direct the Mustangs to a 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 non-league victory against Strathmore.

Here are the choices for the week of Aug. 21-25:

  • Andrew Camarillo, football, Orosi: Camarillo rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cardinals to a 56-33 win against Madera South.

  • Jordan Crisp, football, Tulare Union: Crisp threw four touchdowns as the Tribe defeated Mt. Whitney 54-13.

  • Chris Garcia, football, Golden West: Garcia had four catches for 164 yards receiving and a pair of touchdowns in a 44-33 defeat at Arroyo Grande.

  • Micah Paden, football, Central Valley Christian: Paden registered 295 kick return yards and scored three touchdowns in the Cavaliers' non-league 63-41 win over Ripon Christian.

  • Jonathan Perez, football, Farmersville: Perez racked up 10 tackles and two sacks to help the Aztecs beat Parlier 32-22.

  • Haven Rich, volleyball, Exeter: Rich generated 11 kills, five aces and nine digs as the Monarchs downed Madera South 25-13, 25-6, 25-13 in a non-league match.

  • Aurora Sotelo, volleyball, Mission Oak: Sotelo had eight kills, eight digs and two aces to lead the Hawks to a 25-16, 25-18, 25-14 win over Summit Charter Collegiate Academy.

  • Avery Starr, volleyball, Tulare Western: Starr tallied 13 digs, 12 kills, and three blocks to direct the Mustangs to a 25-12, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19 non-league victory against Strathmore.
