Tulare County Athlete of the Week: El Diamante's Holden Benevento

El Diamante water polo player Holden Benevento was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County high school athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on Sept. 1, Benevento received 1,869 votes, or a 19% majority, of the 9,819 responses.

Benevento, a senior, had nine goals, five assists and five steals in a 19-15 win against Kingsburg.

Here are the choices for the week of Aug. 28 to Sept. 1:

  • Holden Benevento, water polo, El Diamante: The senior had nine goals, five assists and five steals in a 19-15 win against Kingsburg.

  • Shianne Davis, volleyball, Golden West: Davis led the Trailblazers with 10 kills, seven digs, and two aces in a 16-25, 16-25, 20-25 loss to Kingsburg.

  • Jason De La Cruz, football, Orosi: The sophomore free safety set a new school record with four interceptions in a win over Avenal. He returned one of them 36 yards for a touchdown to seal the 28-13 victory. De La Cruz also blocked an extra point.

  • Audrey Hyde, volleyball, Redwood: Hyde delivered two blocks, 18 digs, 23 kills and 26 assists as the undefeated Rangers outlasted Clovis East 22-25, 19-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-7 in a non-league match.

  • Ruby Martinez, volleyball, Mission Oak: Martinez had an ace, a block, 38 assists and four digs to lift the Hawks to a 15-25, 29-27, 25-17, 25-21 victory against El Diamante.

  • Faith Powell, volleyball, Tulare Western: Powell added 15 digs and 19 assists in a 25-22, 25-12, 25-21 victory versus Mt. Whitney.

  • Julian Ramirez, football, Dinuba: Ramirez scored two touchdowns to lead the Emperors to a 22-15 win over Golden West. He also rushed for 68 yards.

  • Demaje Riley, football, Tulare Union: Riley racked up 181 all-purpose yards (five catches, 66 yards receiving; 115 punt return yards; two total touchdowns) to spark the Tribe to a 49-3 win over El Diamante.

  • Micah Rodriguez, football, Mt. Whitney: Rodriguez completed 13 of 18 passes for two touchdowns to lead the Pioneers to a victory against Morro Bay.

  • Isaiah Taylor, football, Woodlake: Taylor ran for two touchdowns and 125 yards in a loss to Exeter.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
