Tulare County athlete of the week: CVC's Landon Holloway

Central Valley Christian baseball player Landon Holloway was voted by readers as the Visalia Times-Delta Tulare County prep athlete of the week.

In an online poll that closed on April 28, Holloway received 5,361 votes, or a 30% majority, of the 17,919 responses.

Holloway earned the win on the hill as the Cavaliers routed Selma 17-9.

Here are the choices for the week of April 24-28:

  • Alastair Batchman, boys golf, Redwood: The senior shot a 71 at Valley Oaks Golf Course to direct the Rangers to victory in an East Yosemite League contest.

  • Matthew Bettencourt, baseball, El Diamante: Bettencourt fired a complete game shutout with 13 strikeouts. He allowed just two hits in a 10-0 East Yosemite League win over Golden West and also added a hit and three RBI.

  • Michaela Brown, softball, Redwood: Brown hurled a pair of complete games with 12 combined strikeouts to lead the Rangers to wins over Monache and Golden West.

  • Taylor Hastin, softball, Tulare Union: Hastin unleashed a solo home run to seal the Tribe's 1-0 win versus Mission Oak.

  • Landon Holloway, baseball, Central Valley Christian: Holloway earned the win on the hill as the Cavaliers routed Selma 17-9.

  • Ben Leon, baseball, Tulare Western: Leon registered 12 combined hits with a double, triple and home run in wins over Dinuba and Centennial. He also drove in seven runs and scored another seven runs and finished his outstanding four-game stretch with a .706 batting average.

  • Zach Mell, baseball, Mt. Whitney: Mell is a four-year varsity player for the Pioneers who bats lead-off and starts at shortstop.

  • Ashlee Orozco, softball, Dinuba: Orozco knocked in three runs on two hits as the Emperors defeated Lemoore.

  • Joey Rico, baseball, Redwood: Rico launched a three-run homer in the third inning to spark the Rangers' to a win versus rival Mt. Whitney.

  • Ruben Ruiz, baseball, Exeter: Ruiz generated four hits, including a double and triple, and drove in five runs in a victory against Hanford West.

Nominations are based on information available to the Times-Delta.

All high school varsity players from Tulare County can be on the ballot. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
