There are just a few weeks left in the high school fall sports regular season, and teams will soon begin their postseason push.
This week’s Statesman Journal Athlete of the Week nominees are:

Riley Burns, Stayton boys soccer
Yulissa Chavez Cortes, Kennedy girls cross country
Vote for the athlete you think is most deserving. The poll closes at noon Thursday.
Lauryn Johnson, West Salem volleyball
Against McNary, she had six aces, 20 kills and 10 digs. Against South Salem, she had 17 kills. In a tournament at Westview, she had 35 kills.
Joel Sanchez, McKay football
He rushed for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the Scots’ 53-25 win against Crescent Valley.
Riley Burns, Stayton boys soccer
He scored the Eagles’ goal in a 1-1 tie against North Marion, and he had two goals and two assists in their 8-0 win against Cascade.
Yulissa Chavez Cortes, Kennedy girls cross country
She has a season-best time of 21:57.7, which she ran Sept. 13 at the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational. That time is the eighth-best in Class 3A/2A/1A District 2.
