LaVille's Michael Good wins South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week vote, April 15-21, 2024

Congratulations to LaVille senior Michael Good for winning the South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week vote for April 15-21, 2024. It was a back-and-forth battle for the vote for the first 48 hours, with Good surging in the vote total late Tuesday and early Wednesday to pull away with the win.

Good paced the Lancers to a second-place finish in Class B at the Goshen Relays by winning the discus competition (168-7 feet) and taking second place in the shot put (48-2 feet). His discus throw nearly set a meet record, falling less than three feet short.

OTHER NOMINEES

Concord baseball senior Braeden Messenger

Messenger pitched all eight innings in a 2-1 win over NorthWood Monday, kickstarting what would be a 4-0 week for the Minutemen. He also batted .357 and had a .471 on-base percentage in those four games from the leadoff spot in the lineup.

Elkhart boys track senior Nicholas Edwards

Edwards was the top point scorer in Class A of the Goshen Relays, winning the long jump competition (20-9.75 feet) and taking second in the high jump (6-2 feet). He helped the Lions win the team championship in Class A.

Jimtown baseball junior Ben McAlister

McAlister helped the Jimmies win a big game against Mishawaka Marian Wednesday, pitching a complete game on the mound and adding three RBI at the plate in a 7-3 victory. For the week, McAlister had a team-high seven hits across five games.

New Prairie softball junior Ava Geyer

Geyer pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Adams Monday, a five-inning perfect game where she struck out all 15 batters she faced against Clay Wednesday, and 5 1/3rd innings in a 10-0 win over Chesterton Saturday. For the week, Geyer allowed just one hit and struck out 40 batters in three victories. She also batted .385 and had four RBI for the week as well.

Saint Joseph softball junior Berkley Zache

Zache continued to show why she's one of the best players in the state this week. She pitched a combined 18 innings in three games, allowing just two hits and no runs. The highlight came Saturday when she pitched a seven-inning perfect game, striking out 19 of 21 batters she faced in a 10-0 win over Bellmont to help the Huskies win the Kokomo Tournament. Zache also helped her cause at the plate, hitting five doubles and tallying eight RBI in six total games.

South Bend Trinity boys golf senior Jacob Palmer

Playing in a tough field at the Lake Central Invitational, Palmer finished second with a 73, only trailing former state champion Aiden Guiterrez from Valparaiso. As a team, Trinity was the top placer of area teams, taking seventh with a score of 328. Palmer also helped the Titans win three, nine-hole matches during the week, improving their record to 5-0 in those contests.
