Record Athlete of the Week: Linden's Nina Lagorio

The votes are in and Nina Lagorio of Linden softball is the Record Athlete of the Week for the week of April 16-22. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Lagorio earned over 90% of the votes cast for a total of 12,027 votes.

Lagorio is a rising star on the mound for the Lions who leads the Sac Joaquin Athletic Association in no-hitters. Her latest no-hitter came on April 19 against Weston Ranch. The sophomore struck out 13 batters and ended up helping the Lions blow the Cougars out to win 20-0.

She has continued her success as Linden is on a four-game winning streak following the win over Weston Ranch. Against Mountain House on April 24, Lagorio finished the game by striking out seven batters and only allowing six runs to Linden’s 10. The sophomore pitcher will play a key role in closing out the regular season in a dominating fashion ahead of the playoffs.

  • Feb. 11: Cameron Silva, Manteca girls soccer and Mario Williams Jr., Venture Academy boys basketball

  • Feb. 18: Bryan Cuellar, Venture Academy boys soccer and Briseis Serrano, Lincoln wrestling

  • Feb. 25: Taydem Khamjoi, Chavez wrestling and Eli Terpsma, Ripon Christian boys basketball

  • March 4: Jordan Lee, St. Mary's girls basketball and Elijah Mobley, Weston Ranch boys basketball

  • March 18: Sophia Coronado, Kimball softball and Joel Van Groningen, Ripon Christian boys volleyball

  • March 25: Parker Burks, Franklin baseball

  • April 1: Andrew Wright, Lodi baseball

  • April 8: Beau Daluz, Linden baseball

  • April 15: Kenedi Brooks, Lodi softball

Readers can vote for their favorite San Joaquin, Calaveras, and Amador counties athletes who have shined the previous week. Voting can be done at the newspaper’s website, recordnet.com.

Here are the candidates for April 16-22 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

  • Jessica Almeida, softball, Manteca: Almeida played a crucial role in Manteca’s 2-0 win over Valley Oak League foe East Union on April 20. The senior ended the game with a 0.667 batting average reeling in two hits, a run, and an RBI on three at-bats. Her hot bat helped get the Buffaloes’ offense rolling.

  • Owen Altadonna, boys volleyball, Sierra: Altadonna was near unstoppable in Sierra’s historic win over Lathrop on April 21. The sophomore middle hitter led all players in kills with 18 kills and only three attacking errors. His lethal offense helped the Timberwolves secure a 3-2 victory the first win over the Spartans.

  • Diego Davis, baseball, Lincoln: Lincoln had a couple of hot bats during its three-game sweep over Tokay, and Davis was one of them. On April 19th’s game, Davis led the Trojans' offense with three hits, two runs, two RBIs, and a triple. The senior shortstop helped his team to a 6-5 victory over the Tigers.

  • Shanye Harris, track and field, Edison: During Edison’s meet against Bear Creek on April 20, Harris set a personal record in the 100-meter event. She finished with a time of 11.46 seconds to take first place. Harris also won first in the 200 meters, 4x100 relays, and 4x400 relays.

  • Nina Lagorio, softball, Linden: Lagorio is on her stride this season recording her second no-hitter of the season on April 19 against Weston Ranch. The sophomore pitcher struck out 13 batters and shut down the Cougar's offense. Linden went on to win 20-0, its largest margin victory so far this season.

  • Kameron Moulton, swimming, Edison: As only a freshman swimmer, Moulton shinned during the San Joaquin Athletic Association Qualifiers and Finals League Swim Meet on April 22. He placed in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle which earned 24 points for the Vikings. Moulton and Edison placed third in the meet as a team.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras and Amador counties. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
