Record Athlete of the Week: Bear Creek's Gianna Galli

The first Record/Recordnet.com Athlete of the Week for the month of May is Gianna Galli of Bear Creek softball. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Galli received 34.9% of the votes cast for a total of 464 votes.

Galli earned this award following her standout performance on May 3 against Stagg to help the Bruins push for a two-way tie for the San Joaquin Athletic Association championship. The senior shortstop finished the game leading Bear Creek’s offense with four RBIs, three runs, and three hits.

Following the 14-4 victory over the Delta Queens, Galli has continued to be a driving force for the Bruins. They went on to win out the rest of their regular season taking down Franklin, Edison, and McNair. In their latest win, a 22-1 blowout over McNair on May 10, Galli’s bat was still hot. She got four runs across the board and four RBIs.

  • March 18: Sophia Coronado, Kimball softball and Joel Van Groningen, Ripon Christian boys volleyball

  • March 25: Parker Burks, Franklin baseball

  • April 1: Andrew Wright, Lodi baseball

  • April 8: Beau Daluz, Linden baseball

  • April 15: Kenedi Brooks, Lodi softball

  • April 22: Nina Lagorio, Linden softball

  • April 29: Elysia Duarte, Kimball softball

Here are the candidates for April 30- May 6 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

  • Daniel Behrmann, baseball, Tracy: In the Bulldogs’ final game of the season on May 3 Behrmann led his team’s offense. He finished the game with three runs, two hits, and a double to secure a 6-3 win over West. This game solidified Behrmann in Tracy baseball history as he has the school’s highest career batting average of 0.443.

  • Ethan Fong, track and field, Lincoln: Fong jumped his way to the top of the rankings in California following the Tri-City Athletic Track and Field Championship on May 3-5. He ended the meet with a triple jump score of 48 feet, the highest in score in the state. Fong is also the Trojans’ all-time record holder in triple jump.

  • Gianna Galli, softball, Bear Creek: Bear Creek’s offensive was unstoppable against Stagg on May 3, and leading the charge was Galli. The senior shortstop went three for three reeling in two doubles, a triple, four RBIs, and three runs. Her clutch at-bats helped put the Bruins first in the San Joaquin Athletic Association.

  • Shanye Harris, track and field, Edison: Harris shined in the SJAA Track and Field Championship on May 2-4. She took home gold in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay events. Harris has been at the top of the SJAA track and field rankings all season long and will be testing her luck in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II meet from May 10-12.

  • Matea Muraoka, softball, St. Mary’s: Thanks to Muraoka, the Rams handled Tracy with ease during their game on May 4. The sophomore finished the game with three RBIs, two doubles, and a run leading to a 9-5 win for St. Mary’s. Defensively, she was also sound, wracking up eight putouts.

  • Abraham Palacios, boys volleyball, Weston Ranch: Palacios led the Cougars to victory in the SJS Division 2 Playoffs against Manteca on May 2. The junior outside hitter finished with a game-high 19 kills, two blocks, and an ace. His offensive contribution has got Weston Ranch as far as the quarterfinals in the postseason.

Athlete of the Week nominations are based on information available to The Record about all high school varsity players from San Joaquin, Calaveras and Amador counties. Nominations must be received for consideration by Monday morning following that week's games.
