Aubrey Newell voted North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 5-11
After four days of voting, Eastside freshman Aubrey Newell was selected as the North Jersey Girls Basketball Player of the Week.
Newell enjoyed a breakout week, averaging more than double her season-long scoring average by dropping in 14.0 points per game in three wins. She netted a career-best 21 in a Passaic County quarterfinal win over Wayne Valley and averaged 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals as well.
Here were the other nominees:
Olivia Centrelli
Mahwah senior forward
Centrelli notched her first two double-digit scoring outputs of the season at the best possible time. She had 10 points in a win over Ramsey, then followed with 13 points and 6 rebounds against River Dell to help the T-Birds avenge an early-season divisional loss and secure the Big North Patriot title.
Bao DeLorenzo
Hawthorne Christian freshman guard
DeLorenzo experienced one of the finest weeks of her young career, averaging 14 points and draining 5 three-pointers in three games. She had 14 points and 3 assists in a win at Ridgefield, plus 15 points and 4 steals in a victory against crosstown rival Hawthorne, as the Defenders improved to 10-2.
Alanisse Freire
DePaul senior guard
Freire scored 15 points, sinking a three and converting 4-of-6 free throws, to help the Spartans hold off Pompton Lakes and advance to the Passaic County Tournament semifinals. For the week, she averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds and shot 75 percent at the foul line.
Layla Giordano
Old Tappan senior forward
Giordano erupted for a season-high 28 points in a win against Teaneck that allowed the Golden Knights to tie for first place in the Big North National. Although Teaneck turned the tables in the Bergen County semis, she still finished the week averaging 21.3 points and 6 rebounds in 3 games.
Siena Shuster
Wayne Hills senior guard/forward
Shuster scored her 1,000th career point in Saturday’s Passaic County quarterfinals against Passaic. She finished with 23 points, 16 rebounds and 6 steals to average 20.0 points, 18.0 rebounds and 3.8 steals over four games. She also grabbed a season-high 25 rebounds in a win over rival Wayne Valley.
Laurel Space
West Milford junior forward
Space led the Highlanders on a three-game win streak that culminated with a Passaic County quarterfinal win over Kennedy, which avenged an earlier-season loss. She logged a season-high 18 points in that game and averaged 12.7 points with 4 total three-pointers for the week.
Mackenzie Vellis
Rutherford sophomore guard
Vellis helped the Bulldogs extend their win streak to seven and advance to the Bergen Invitational final during a 3-0 week. She averaged 12.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.3 assists and was part of a defensive effort that shut out Fair Lawn for the first 1½ quarters of Saturday’s BIT semifinal.
