Jason Amalbert voted North Jersey Baseball Player of the Week for May 19-25

After four days of voting, DePaul sophomore Jason Amalbert was selected as the North Jersey Baseball Player of the Week.

Amalbert led the Spartans (18-9) to a 2-0 week, including a 15-1 win over Newark Academy in a North Non-Public A tournament opener. He was 5 for 6, with a homer, two walks, four steals, five runs and four RBIs. He threw four scoreless innings and earned the playoff win.

Here were the other nominees:

Myles Balchan

Rutherford freshman

Balchan had a big week at the plate to help the Bulldogs (13-12) to a 2-1 week that featured a nine-inning, 6-4 win over Bernards in a North 2, Group 2 opener. He was 5 for 8, with one walk and three runs, and he had three hits and a run against Bernards.

Tyler Benway

Pompton Lakes senior

Benway guided the Cardinals (2-1) to a 2-0 week, featuring a 5-1 victory over Butler in a North 1, Group 1 opener. He threw a 3-hitter, allowing no walks, no earned runs and striking out 10 against Butler. He added a hit, two walks, two runs and four RBIs.

Jake Delaney

Passaic Valley junior

Delaney threw a five-inning no-hitter to help the Hornets (17-7) to a 2-0 week that extended their winning streak to seven games. He allowed one walk, hit one batter, and struck out 11 in an 11-0 victory over Ridgefield in a North 2, Group 2 opener.

JT Deriso

Pascack Valley junior

Deriso earned both wins during a 2-0 week for the Panthers (19-8) that stretched their winning streak to five games. Over 7 1/3 innings, including a 5-1 win over Parsippany Hills in a North 1, Group 2 opener, he scattered eight hits, two walks and struck out eight.

Josh Feuerstein

Fair Lawn senior

Feuerstein led the Cutters (12-14) to arguably the biggest first-round upset by a Bergen County team in the state tournament. He threw a three-hitter to lead the No. 10 seed to a 2-0 win over Hudson County champion and No. 7 Union City in North 1, Group 4.

Jeff Germosen

St. Joseph senior

Germosen pitched the Green Knights (21-5) to a third Bergen County tournament win and the program’s record 12th Bergen crown. In a 5-4 title victory over Westwood, he allowed three hits, three walks, one earned run and struck out seven over six innings.

Anthony Pizzuti

Lyndhurst senior

Pizzuti led the Golden Bears (18-8) to a 3-0 week to extend their winning streak to six games. He threw a three-hitter, allowing two walks, one earned run and striking out seven, in a 4-1 win over Parsippany in a North 2, Group 2 opener. He was 4 for 11, with three runs and two RBIs.

Sean Spitaleri

Glen Rock sophomore

Spitaleri guided the Panthers (23-3-1) to a 2-1 week, highlighted by a 5-4 victory over West Milford in a North 1, Group 2 opener. He was 4 for 8, walked, was hit by a pitch twice, scored two runs and had four RBIs. He had a hit, walk and RBI against West Milford.

Yutaka Uchida

Leonia senior

Uchida earned his sixth win of the season, 100th career strikeout, and led the Lions (14-11) to a first-round playoff victory. In 6 1/3 innings, he allowed four hits, one walk, two earned runs and struck out four in a 4-3 win over Voorhees in North 2, Group 2.
