Vote for Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week (May 15-20, 2023)

The postseason has begun in track and field, lacrosse and tennis. Other sports will soon follow.

That means the school year is winding down, which makes me more sad than it did when I was actually a student. Covering high school sports is a job, but it’s a fun job.

It also means athletic performances take on greater meaning. I could fill this ballot with great efforts at track and field regionals last weekend, but some of the top performers have already been Livingston Daily Athlete of the Week this spring or have been on a recent ballot.

It was a great week for baseball pitching in Livingston County so, even though that sport is still in its regular season, it was hard to ignore a couple of the top pitchers.

Voting is open until late Wednesday afternoon. Vote early, vote often.

Nick Hoorn, Howell baseball

Hoorn, a sophomore, threw a no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Canton. He struck out 10 batters and didn’t allow a walk, going the full seven innings on only 77 pitches. Hoorn is 5-0 with a 1.52 earned run average and 35 strikeouts in 32⅓ innings, walking only nine.

Liam Kinney, Brighton track and field

Kinney scored 26 points for Brighton’s regional championship team by qualifying for the state meet in three events. He won the 300-meter hurdles in 39.84 seconds, placed second in pole vault at 14 feet, 3 inches and placed second in the 110 hurdles in 15.07.

Easton Storey, Brighton baseball

Storey is pitching like someone who has been signed by a Big Ten Conference school. The Purdue University recruit threw six shutout innings, allowed only two hits and struck out 14 batters for the third straight game in a 2-0 victory over Grand Ledge. Storey hasn’t allowed a run in his last five appearances, striking out 53 of 95 batters and giving up only seven hits in 25 innings.

Adam Surowiec, Charyl Stockwell track and field

Surowiec had two first-place finishes and a second, helping Charyl Stockwell win its first regional championship in any sport. He won the 400 in 53.86, was second in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 7 inches, and ran on the winning 1,600 relay team. He also helped the 1,600 relay team win a MIAC jamboree four days earlier.

Kaitlyn Ward, Howell track and field

Ward scored 17 points individually for Howell, which finished second in the regional meet by three points to Grand Ledge. Ward qualified for the state meet in two events, placing second in the 100 hurdles in 16.45 and fourth in pole vault at 10-3. She was also sixth in her final event, the 300 hurdles.
