North East basketball players top first Erie County Athlete polls for the new year

A pair of North East basketball players topped the polls this week Athlete of the Week voting.

The Female and Male Athlete of the Week polls ended Thursday at 5 p.m. after 48 hours of voting. The polls, based on the previous week's performances, are sponsored by AHN.

North East's ​Alex Cozzens, who led the Grapepickers during a win vs. Corry in the Erie County Classic at Fairview, was the Female Athlete poll's top vote-getter with 72 votes. Brooke Przybylski, a Harbor Creek basketball player, was a close second with 65 votes.

In the Male Athlete poll, the 'Pickers' ​Willie Shunk, the most valuable player during Iroquois’ C. Thomas Barringer Classic, won with 126 votes. Iroquois basketball player Colton Carpenter was the runner-up with 86 votes.

Readers can nominate an athlete for the polls by sending an email to sports@timesnews.com, with "Athlete of the Week nominee" in the subject line. Include the athlete's name, school, sport and year, plus a breakdown of their achievements from the previous week.

We don't promise all nominees will be used, but will consider all nominees.
