It is again time to vote for the Gaylord Herald Times Athlete of the Week.
Please send stats/nominations to djespersen@gaylordheraldtimes.com by Sunday evening to have your athletes nominated.
Katie Berkshire, Gaylord cross country
The strong start for area cross-country runners continued on Friday, Sept. 15 as Gaylord traveled to Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invitational.
Sophomore Katie Berkshire impressed yet again, taking first place among nearly 300 runners in the High School Bronze race (MHSAA Division 2) with a time of 19 minutes, 9 seconds.
Ty Bensinger, Gaylord football
Gaylord football is rolling through the first four weeks of the season, headed into the second half of the season with a 4-0 record and fresh off their third consecutive victory over their rivals from Petoskey.
Multiple players stood out, but senior Ty Bensinger had the best all-around performance, leading the team with 140 rushing yards on offense while hauling in a ridiculous one-handed interception on defense.
He helped Gaylord to its 9-0 victory over the Northmen in week four, keeping the Jaycees Trophy in Gaylord for another year.
Daniel Jacobson, Gaylord St. Mary football
Gaylord St. Mary debuted their new stadium in style on Friday, blowing out Bellaire 58-0 to start 1-0 on the school's brand-new field.
It was a big night for quarterback Daniel Jacobson individually as he racked up 150 yards passing, 33 yards rushing and five total TDs (3 passing TDs, 2 rushing TDs), all in the first half.
Ava Wells, Gaylord volleyball
After a rough start to BNC play for Gaylord volleyball, they seemingly got back on track this past weekend as they advanced all the way to the finals of the Graying Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16.
It was a big day for sophomore Ava Wells as she racked 69 digs and 13 aces throughout the five matches.
Jayden Marlatt, Johannesburg-Lewiston
JoBurg was also in attendance for the Grayling Tournament and while they didn't see quite the same team success that Gaylord did, it was a big day for their senior leader Jayden Marlatt.
Marlatt led the team with 33 kills and 26 digs while providing 13 serving points. She helped JoBurg reach the semifinals of the tourney before falling to Gladwin, the eventual tournament champions.
