Vote for the Fan Favorite South Texas high school football preseason player of the year

Mathis senior running back Ethan Ybarra had a strong junior season was voted the Fan Favorite South Texas high school football preseason player of the year.

The Pirates' workhorse amassed 1,282 yards and nine touchdowns in nine games for Mathis last year and topped a strong group of preseason player of the year candidates.

Ybarra received 20,575 of the 79,269 votes cast, which was 25.8% of all votes.

Alice's Justin Arellano was second with 12,625 votes received.

The Texas high school football season begins Thursday Aug. 24 with a solid slate of games, including the Caller-Times Week 1 Game of the Week: Calallen at Gregory-Portland.

The Driscoll Children's Hospital High School Athlete of the Week poll will begin next week and the Caller-Times will begin taking nominations this week by email at ctsports@caller.com on X (formerly Twitter) @callersports or on the Caller-Times Facebook Page.
