Meet the winner: Fossil Ridge softball's Avery Akers voted Blue Federal Credit Union's Athlete of the Week

The Coloradoan is renewing a weekly Athlete of the Week series for this high school year, partnering with Blue Federal Credit Union to honor the best Fort Collins-area high school athletes.

There are five nominees every week, and fans can vote every Monday through Wednesday at coloradoan.com/sports/high-school-sports.

Here is the second edition of the 2023-24 school year as we hit Labor Day.

You can find the ballot at the bottom of the page. Voting each week will be open until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with the winner announced on Thursday at coloradoan.com and via the Coloradoan's Instagram page.

Fans can nominate their favorite athletes (deadline: 11:59 p.m. every Saturday) and the Coloradoan Sports staff will ultimately select the five nominees each week.

Meet last week's winner: Timnath's Izzy Schimmelpfennig voted Blue Federal Credit Union's Athlete of the Week

The following athletes were nominated for their performances from Aug. 28-Sept. 2:

  • Avery Akers, Fossil Ridge softball: The SaberCats freshman had a monster day in Fossil Ridge's 18-0 win over Monarch, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and 9 RBIs in the game. Akers is now hitting .555 so far this season.

  • Lindsey Hinson, Windsor softball: The Wizards junior continued her hot start to the season, going 6-for-7 in two games last week. That included a 5-for-5 day with two triples, three RBIs and three runs scored in Windsor's 12-3 win over Roosevelt, pushing her season average to .600.

  • Alex Kolczak, Timnath football: The Cubs junior kicker came up big in Timnath's first-ever football win, booting three field goals, including the game-winner in double overtime. He also had two kickoff touchbacks and averaged 43 yards/punt with one downed inside the 20-yard line.

  • Kadence Marsh, Windsor volleyball: The Wizards junior dominated in Windsor's 3-0 sweep over Erie last week with a fantastic all-around match. Marsh piled up 10 kills, 10 assists, eight digs and three blocks, setting up Windsor's offense and defense in a 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 win.

  • Owen Mills, Poudre boys soccer: First hat trick for a city player this season! The Impalas sophomore made sure Poudre's home opener was a good one, scoring three of their four goals in a shutout win vs. Monarch on Thursday.
