Vote for Athlete of the Week: Gardner's Schaeffer excels in regional invitational & more
About halfway through the season, Gardner-area teams are starting to settle in and the top athletes continue to set themselves apart. Several performances earned these Gardner area stars a spot on the Athlete of the Week poll for Jan. 8-13.
Gavin Richard of Gardner hockey was voted Athlete of the Week for Jan. 1-6 for his great performances in multiple games. He scored two goals in each of the Wildcats' two games, both ending in victories. Richard earned 27.08% with 2,689 votes.
Coming in behind Richard was teammate Mark Quinn. Quinn has excelled between the pipes for Gardner hockey this season and landed his spot on the poll for his 29-save game against Lunenburg/Ayer-Shirley. He received 10.37% of votes.

Girls Basketball
Brooke Haddocks, Narragansett
Brooke Haddocks scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in Narragansett's win over Tahanto on January 8. Amanda Iannacone added 15 points and Kaelyn Cote 10.
Shannnon Connolly, Murdock
Shannon Connolly scored 11 points for Murdock in its game against North Brookfield on January 11. Connolly paced Murdock, helping to narrow the gap in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils ultimately lost 38-30. Sadie Bauver scored 13 points and also was a big proponent in Murdock's offensive push later in the game.
Allie McLaughlin, Oakmont
Oakmont notched a much-needed victory on January 12 against Fitchburg 42-30. Allie McLaughlin led the Spartans with 11 points.
Boys Basketball
Mike Cannon, Monty Tech
Mike Cannon scored 15 points to lead Monty Tech past AMSA 43-42 on January 10. Jayden Jones added 8 points in the victory.
Zach Swan, Gardner
Gardner's Zach Swan led with 19 points in a win over West Boylston on January 10. Chris Leger and Cam Gamache each contributed 14 points as well.
Corey Henderson, Narragansett
Corey Henderson had a breakthrough game for Narragansett, scoring 14 points in the Warriors' 62-38 win over West Boylston. Max Kauffman scored the game-high of 23 points.
Boys Hockey
Nick Paquet, Fitchburg/Monty Tech
Nick Paquet scored two goals in Fitchburg/Monty Tech's win over Leominster on January 11. Cody Berkio and Jacob Pruneau each added another for a final score of 4-1 against their opponent.
Josh Crotty, Gardner
Gardner's Josh Crotty scored the winning goal on a pass from Matt Lupaczyk against St. Bernard's on January 13. Gavin Richard scored the Wildcats' first goal and Mark Quinn made 34 saves in goal.
Sam Dunn, Oakmont
Sam Dunn scored two goals in Oakmont's 5-4 victory against Worcester on January 13. The Spartans won behind a big team effort, with other goals from Nate Hylan, Cooper Carignan and Jackson Mathieu.
Girls Indoor Track & Field
Elaine Schaeffer, Gardner
Elaine Schaeffer had a successful week, starting out with a high jump first place finish in a meet against other area schools at Wachusett Regional on January 10. Schaeffer tied for third out of 31 competitors at the Northeast Invitational Meet later in the week at Reggie Lewis.
Lindsey Elliot, Oakmont
Lindsey Elliot was a two-event winner at the Wachusett meet on January 10, coming in first in the 300 meter and 55 meter events.
Boys Indoor Track and Field
Jayden Brostrom. Oakmont
Jayden Brostrom, along with fellow Spartan Elliot, won two events at the weekly meet at Wachusett. Brostrom won both the 1 miler and 1000 meter races at the meet.
Julian Haydar, Narragansett Regional
Freshman Julian Haydar took first place in the 2 mile event, marking his first-ever first place win of the indoor season. Narragansett is back after a hiatus of not having an indoor track team, so Haydar's win was a big moment for the Warriors.
