Canyon View, Sandra Day O'Connor students voted Arizona Republic HS athletes of the week
Canyon View track and field athlete Annaleise Taylor and Sandra Day O'Connor volleyball player Finn Kearney have been chosen as this week's Arizona Republic high school athletes of the week, in weekly polls posted on March 11, sponsored by Diamond Kitchen & Bath and posted on azcentral.com.
Nearly 13,500 votes were cast.
Taylor was nominated after her performance last week when she set the meet record in the 300-meter hurdles (42.33) at the Devon Allen Invitational on March 7 before traveling to Boston to compete in the New Balance Indoor Nationals on March 9. Taylor reached the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles.
Also nominated were Red Mountain softball player Payton Westra, who hit 3 home runs with 7 RBIs combined in two wins against Gilbert Highland (6-1) on March 5 and on March 8 versus Gilbert Perry (18-5); and Xavier Preparatory softball player Lauren Putz, who had 4 home runs and 9 RBIs in back-to-back wins for the Gators on March 5 over Mesa Desert Ridge and March 6 over Phoenix Sunnyslope.
In the boys poll, Kearney was nominated after he had 23 kills in the Eagles' 3-1 win over Brophy Prep on March 6. Also nominated were Gilbert track and field athlete Vance Nilsson, who broke two meet records at the Devon Allen Invitational in the 110-meter hurdles (13.87) and the 300-meter hurdles (36.87) and is ranked No. 1 in the country for the 300-meter hurdles; and Saguaro baseball player Cam Caminiti, who struck out 16 and walked 1 batter in five innings pitched in a 10-0 win last week over Glendale Deer Valley.
Nominees are based on performances in AIA-sanctioned sports. Polls are posted on Monday and voting closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Results are announced the next day on azcentral.com and in The Arizona Republic on Friday. Nominees are chosen by Republic sports staff, with input from coaches and readers.
