Rincon University, Notre Dame students voted Republic's high school athletes of the week

Tucson Rincon University sophomore tennis player Vikram Narendran and Scottsdale Notre Dame Preparatory freshman tennis player Georgia Cranford have been chosen as this week's Arizona Republic high school athletes of the week, in weekly polls posted on April 29, sponsored by Diamond Kitchen & Bath and posted on azcentral.com.

Narendran was nominated after he won both of his singles matches at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division I state championships, in wins vs. players from Gilbert Perry (6-1, 6-2) and Mesa Mountain View (7-5, 7-5) to advance to the title match against Glendale Mountain Ridge.

Also nominated were Gilbert senior track and field athlete Vance Nilsson, who re-broke his Arizona state record in the 300-meter hurdles at the Northeast Valley Championships by running a nation-leading time of 35.50 seconds; and American Leadership Academy Queen Creek senior track and field athlete Taylor Searle, who cleared 17-6 feet in the pole vault at the Seton Catholic Last Chance Qualifier for the No. 2 mark in state history.

In the girl's poll, Cranford was nominated after she won both of her singles matches at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II state championships, beating players from Tucson Salpointe Catholic (6-0, 6-0) and Scottsdale Saguaro (6-0, 6-2) to advance to the title match against Waddell Canyon View.

Also nominated were Glendale Preparatory Academy junior track and field athlete Sofia Boonzaayer, who threw 43-3 in the shot put at the Northeast Valley Championships, which is No. 2 in Arizona this season; and Oro Valley Canyon del Oro senior track and field athlete Katrina Trahan, who threw 140-11 in the discus at the East Valley Qualifier for the No. 2 mark in the state this season.

Nominees are based on performances in AIA-sanctioned sports. Polls are posted on Monday and voting closes at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Results are announced the next day on azcentral.com and in The Arizona Republic on Friday. Nominees are chosen by Republic sports staff, with input from coaches and readers.
