Vote: Ames Tribune Athletes of the Week for April 1-7

This past week of Ames-area high school spring sports competition was full of outstanding performances in girls and boys track and field, soccer, tennis and golf.

Many female and male athletes stood out during the week. Track athletes are attempting to qualify for the Drake Relays, golf and tennis teams are getting into the swing of things, and soccer teams head into the meat of their schedules.

Here are the Ames Tribune female and male Athlete of the Week candidates for the week of April 1-7. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Girls

Sarah Feddersen, Gilbert

Feddersen was part of three victorious events for the Gilbert girls track and field team during the Ram Early Bird meet Friday at Jefferson.

Feddersen won the 800-meter run in 2:19.55. She also anchored Gilbert to a win in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:54.14 and the 4x400 relay with a 4:11.47 showing.

Selah Helgeson, Roland-Story

Helgeson won the 100 hurdles and she helped Roland-Story take second in the girls shuttle hurdle relay at the Nevada Invitational April 4 in Nevada.

Helgeson's winning time in the 100 hurdles was 17.13 seconds. She anchored the Norse girls shuttle hurdle team to a time of 1:12.53.

Kaitlyn Zugay, Ballard

Zugay helped the Ballard girls tennis team sweep Clarke (6-3) and Audubon (9-0) at the Dallas Center-Grime quad meet Friday at the Oak View courts in Grimes.

Zugay defeated Clarke's Madisyn McCoy by an 8-6 score in the No. 1 singles match, and she joined up with Adi Zeigler to win the No. 2 doubles match over Maisy McCoy and Marissa Bakley by an 8-6 score. In the win over Audubon, Zugay blanked the Wheelers' Grace Zaiger by an 8-0 score in singles play, and she and Zeigler downed Lauren Greving and Kaleal Haas by an 8-1 score in the No. 2 doubles match.

Elizabeth Duncan, Ames

Duncan led the Ames girls golf team to a 176-239 victory over Mason City in nine holes to open the season April 4 at the Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

Duncan overcame the windy conditions to shoot a 41. She won medalist by three strokes.

Mya Spykerman, Nevada

Spykerman was the hero for the Class 1A No. 5 Nevada girls soccer team in a victory over Bondurant-Farrar Friday at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

Spykerman scored the only goal in a 1-0 Cub victory. Her goal came during the second half.

Boys

Connor Kunze, Nevada

Kunze won both the 100 and 200-meter dash events and the long jump at the Nevada Co-Ed Invitational track and field meet April 4 at Cub Stadium in Nevada.

Kunze took first in the 100 with a time of 11.10 seconds, and he won the 200 in 22.61. Kunze's winning jump in the long jump was 21 feet even.

Jayden Strum, Roland-Story

Strum won the boys 110 high hurdles and helped Roland-Story take first in the shuttle hurdle relay at the Nevada Invitational April 4.

Strum won the 110 highs in 16.44 seconds. He anchored the Roland-Story boys to victory in the shuttle hurdle with a time of 1:05.05.

Mason Gatchel, Ballard

Gatchel had a strong day for the Ballard boys golf team during the Nevada co-ed quadrangular dual meet April 4 at the Indian Creek Country Club in Nevada.

Gatchel led Ballard with a round of 75 over 18 holes.

Jordan Thoen, Ames

Thoen came up big for the Ames boys soccer team during a 1-0 victory over Des Moines East April 2 in Des Moines.

Thoen scored the game's only goal in the first half to give the Little Cyclones the win. He also put two goals on the board during a 3-0 victory over Urbandale at the Urbandale Invitational.

Anson Bernard, Ames

Bernard played a big role in an 8-3 victory by the Ames boys tennis team over Marshalltown to open the season April 4 at Marshalltown.

Bernard won a tough three-set battle over Marshalltown's Thiessen in the No. 2 singles match. Bernard won the first set by a 6-3 score, lost the second by the same score and then came back to win the ultimate tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-7).

In the No. 1 doubles match Bernard teamed with Tharun Raju to edge Marshalltown's team of Thiessen and Isaac Benscoter. The Ames duo rallied from a 6-1 loss in the opening set to take the second by a 6-1 score, and then they took the ultimate tiebreaker 1-0 (10-7).
