Vols victorious in SEC opener against South Carolina

No. 5 Tennessee extended its winning streak to nine games Friday.

Tennessee opened the Southeastern Conference portion of its schedule with an 8-3 victory over South Carolina before 3,940 fans at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Friday.

Chase Burns started and pitched 6.2 innings en route to earning his fourth win of the 2022 season for Tennessee.

Burns (4-0) allowed one run, two hits and two walks. He struck out nine.

Evan Russell went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run and scored twice.

Cortland Lawson had a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Vols (17-1, 1-0 SEC) a 3-0 lead. Jorel Ortega and Luc Lipcius also homered for UT.

Tennessee scored first against the Gamecocks (10-7, 0-1 SEC) when an RBI single by Drew Gilbert plated Ortega in the bottom of the opening inning.

South Carolina pulled to within, 3-1, in the top of the sixth.

The Gamecocks scored twice in the ninth inning off reliever Kirby Connell, who surrendered two runs and three hits while striking out two.

Camden Sewell also appeared in relief for the Vols.
