Volleyball Recap: Coldwater, Bronson see weekend action

BATTLE CREEK, MI. - The Coldwater Cardinal varsity volleyball team made the trip to Battle Creek Central High School on Saturday to compete in the annual Cereal City Tournament. Coldwater went 2-2 on the weekend, falling in the Gold Bracket quarterfinals to Lakeview in two sets.

Coldwater started the day with a pair of wins over Battle Creek Central (25-11 and 25-11), followed by a sweep of Calhoun Christian (25-12 and 25-11). The Cardinals ended pool play with a tough matchup versus state ranked Bedford, falling in two sets (15-25 and 16-25). With the 2-1 record Coldwater advanced on to the Gold Bracket where they fell to Lakeview in the quarterfinals 21-25 and 16-25 to end the day.

Mackenzie Scheid led the Cardinals with 28 kills and 17 digs while Elli Foley added an impressive 19 aces, nine kills, 46 assists and 14 digs.

Also adding to the Coldwater effort was Mya Porter with 10 aces, nine kills, and 12 digs; Maren DeBeau with 21 digs; and Ava Longstreet with nine kills.

Coldwater’s record now stands at 6-3-2 overall on the season, with their next action coming Tuesday when they travel to Portage Central.

Bronson Volleyball finishes 2-1 at weekend quad 

BRONSON – The Bronson Vikings volleyball program hosted a non-conference quad on Saturday, welcoming three other teams to town for weekend action.

Bronson started the day with a three-set win over Vicksburg (25-14, 25-21 and 25-17) and a three-set win over Jonesville (25-20, 25-12, and 25-15) before falling to Adrian Madison in four sets (16-25, 18-25, 25-15, 17-25).

Bronson was paced by Payton Springstead who recorded 33 kills, 13 digs, five aces and three blocks while Aubree Calloway added 21 kills, 14 digs, 13 blocks and one ace.

Aleah Brackett played solid in the setter spot with 40 assists, 15 digs, seven blocks, and seven aces while All-State setter Brealyn Lasky made her season debut with 30 assists, seven digs, three aces and six kills.

Also adding to the Bronson effort was Ciara Blankenship with three kills, seven aces, 11 digs and three blocks; Kennedy Clemens with four kills, eight aces, 22 digs and six blocks; Ryleigh Fee with three kills and four blocks; Braylyn Dow with one kill and one assist; Itzel Sanchez with two aces and 13 digs; Miriam Sanchez with one ace; and Mya Webb with six aces, four digs and two assists.

“It was nice to be able to get Brealyn (Lasky) on the floor for a bit this weekend,” exclaimed Bronson head coach Jean LaClair. “Overall, we have seen much improvement from last weekend, we just need to work on our consistency.

Bronson will next see action Friday when they head to Beford.
