Vikings 2024 NFL draft scouting report: Louisville WR Jamari Thrash

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2024 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at quarterback, running back, defensive line and edge rusher. We will also focus on wide receiver since it’s a loaded class and an increased chance to get a Stefon Diggs-type steal in the later rounds.

The Vikings are slated to have 9 picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Strengths

Thrash is a YAC machine. 40.5% of his yards come after the catch and he is difficult to bring down. PFF has Thrash with 33 missed tackles forced over the last two seasons.

Awareness is high for Thrash. He understands how to maneuver through traffic and take advantage of space with his route running.

Has a wide catch radius. Can snag the ball away from his frame and bring it in. Keeps his body under control the whole time.

Varies his release package at the line of scrimmage. Can avoid contact in press coverage.

Only played in the slot 10.5% of the time. Has the flexilibity to play in the slot but is an outside receiver by trade.

Weaknesses

Thrash is listed at 6010 and 185 lbs but is he lighter than that? His frame is rather slight and it raises some concerns.

Has nice quickness and burst but looks to lack the long speed to take advantage of elite NFL speed.

Drops have been a slight problem for Thrash. Has 17 on just 261 career targets (9.2 drop percentage per PFF).

Contested catches are not his forte, which shouldn’t be a surprise considering his frame and YAC style of play. 14/43 in contested catch situations, including a paltry 3/19 in 2023.

Thrash is a talented prospect but there are some real questions surrounding him on multiple fronts but Thrash is electric with the ball in his hands. He will continue to be explosive in the open field but does he have the juice to be an elite difference-maker at the next level? That question will be around until he tests and goes to the Senior Bowl.
