The Rush: Washington beats Giants in TNF instant classic

A dramatic game culminated with the Washington Football Team beating the Giants by a point with a game-winning field goal in a TNF instant classic. Plus, The Rush explores the team’s unique evolution off the field.

Video Transcript

- Heinicke throws it into the end zone! Touchdown! What a throw. And Ricky Seals-Jones is there.

JARED QUAY: Thursday Night Football matchups aren't always the best.

- Tell me about it.

JARED QUAY: But last night's game between the winless Giants and the Football Team was actually dope as hell. The dumpster fire NFC East never disappoints. Down by two points with five seconds left, Washington kicked and missed a 48-yard field goal. But an off-sides penalty negated the miss, so Washington got another shot. Dustin Hopkins subsequently drilled the 43-yarder for the win.

- Kick is good!

JARED QUAY: And there are plenty of positives for the Giants, though. New York saw the return of Saquon Barkley-- one of our favorite guests on "The Rush--" who played in his first game since tearing his ACL in week two of last season. We also saw the Giants quarterback Daniel Jones dropping some dimes.

- Has a man, pass caught, Slayton. Touchdown Giants.

JARED QUAY: And running like the wind.

- He is down the sideline. Gets a block, touchdown.

JARED QUAY: Too bad a penalty wiped away that 46-yard touchdown off the scorecard. Had the TD counted, New York probably would have come away with a win. The Washington Football Team deserves plenty of props, though. Washington fielded its ninth starting quarterback since 2018 in Taylor Heinicke, making just his third career NFL start.

- Five first downs on this drive. Heinicke, end zone, McLaurin touchdown.

JARED QUAY: Can we just talk about the evolution of the Washington Football Team real quick? Last night, they had Latinx Heritage Night and the first ever NFL Pride Night Out at a FedEx Field. Maybe they should have got their own nights, but whatever. It's not a big deal, right?

The team had a racist ass name since 1933. And that wasn't Washington's only problem. A disgraceful lack of diversity and allegations by several women of sexual harassment in the workplace. 87 years of problems for that team.

- I'm just stunned.

JARED QUAY: And now, in less than two years the team has changed its name, is coached by a Latino, has the first Black team president in the NFL, a Black GM, female coaches and executive. And is publicly celebrating the Latinx and LGBTQ communities during Thursday Night Football. A nationally televised game, remember.

Don't get it twisted. I'm not saying Dan Snyder is a saint now, because he ain't. But there's one hell of a turnaround. And it proves that change can happen quickly if you want it to. They may as well change the team name to Washington Pride, that name is dope and their colors could be rainbow. I mean, they could just be the Pride Lions, like Mufasa. Or the mascot could be like Tony the Tiger.
