Vic Fangio says Eagles have more of an edge after he consulted with them before Super Bowl

MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio consulted with the Eagles' offense prior to the last Super Bowl.

On the surface, this would seem to give Fangio an advantage on Sunday.

After all, doesn't Fangio have an intimate understanding of Jalen Hurts and Philadelphia's offense? Doesn't this help him prepare?

"You know, not a lot because I was giving them more information than they were giving me," Fangio said Thursday. "You know, that's kind of the way it turned out. So if there's any advantage to be had, by me being there last year, it's in their favor."

The Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35.

Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts passed for 304 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns.

"He has no weaknesses," Fangio said of Hurts. "You know, so that's a strength. And I've always liked him. I told Howie (Roseman, Eagles general manager) back in 2021, he had his quarterback. Very strong. Obviously, his running ability is you know, tops, gives them an extra guy in the run game, makes it hard to defend. Excellent scrambler, great leader. You know, there's hard to try to find fault."

Fangio is from the Philadelphia area. His first professional football job was with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL.

"Memories, lots of them," Fangio said. "You know, I grew up a Philadelphia fan and all sports. Die-hard. Used to, when the Phillies were on the West Coast and it'd be late at night, I had a transistor radio in my bed and I'd listen to the game on radio. Richie Ashburn. So I was a die-hard Phillies fan and Eagles fan growing up."

Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert said Wednesday that Fangio had not yet popped into any offensive meetings with tips.

"No, he hasn’t, but I’m sure he’ll give us some nuggets here and there that are just going to help us improve our scheme and our abilities to go out there and execute at a high level," Mostert said.

But consider that Fangio worked most closely with coach Nick Sirianni and the Eagles' offense as they prepared for the Chiefs' defense.

"I like Nick," Fangio said. "Nick's a really good guy. He's focused, very open. I think he's doing a great job with the Eagles."

The Eagles are ranked second only to the Dolphins in total offense.

They've been highly effective through the air and on the ground.

"First off, you start with their offensive line, and they've got really good players on the O-line. It's probably the best offensive line in the league from a talent standpoint," Fangio said.

"Then they've got a good slew of backs, running back by committee. And then you throw in the oh, by the way, the quarterback might keep it and run it himself. So, it's a very tough assignment from just their talent level, just the way they've been coached."
