Vermont hockey, basketball: Bogues' last-second winner caps Catamounts' 20-point comeback

FRIDAY, FEB. 9

Men’s hockey

Vermont 1, UMass Lowell 1 (Vermont wins shootout)

V: Joel Maatta 1G. Gabe Carriere 27 saves.

L: Mitchell Becker 1G. Henry Welsch 17 saves.

Note: Maatta struck for the lone shootout tally as Vermont tacked on the additional league point vs. Lowell. The Catamounts move to 11-12-2, 5-8-2.

Women’s hockey

Vermont 2, Boston College 2 (Boston College wins shootout 1-0)

V:Natalie Mlynkova 1G, 1A. Lily Humphrey 1G. Jessie McPherson 30 saves.

BC: Katie Pyne 1G. Julia Pellerin 1G. Grace Campbell 36 saves.

Note: Kara Goulding scored the only goal in the shootout as the No. 15 Eagles (14-9-7, 13-5-5) snagged the additional league point. Vermont moves to 11-15-3, 9-11-2.

SATURDAY, FEB. 10

Men’s basketball

Vermont 72, UMBC 70

V: Shamir Bogues 23 points, 2 assists, 0 turnovers. TJ Hurley 11 points, 5 rebounds. TJ Long 7 points, 11 rebounds.

UMBC: Dion Brown 25 points, 6 rebounds. Marcus Banks 16 points. Max Lorca-Lloyd 9 pints, 8 rebounds. Franck Emmou 12 points.

Note: Vermont missed its first 15 field-goal attempts and fell behind 25-5 with 9:46 left in the first half. But behind Bogues' season-high 23 points and his tie-breaking, driving layup with 1.3 seconds on the clock, the Catamounts (19-6, 9-1) escaped Baltimore with their fourth double-digit comeback this season. It was also coach John Becker's 299th victory at Vermont.

Women’s basketball

Vermont 69, UMBC 45

V: Emma Utterback 18 points. Anna Olson 17 points, 6 rebounds. Andjela Matic 14 points, 5 rebounds. Keira Hanson 13 points. Delaney Richason 9 rebounds. Bella Vito 6 steals.

UMBC: Carmen Hanez 12 points.

Note: Vermont (17-8, 9-2) won every quarter and led by by 19 points through the third frame in front of 1,838 on National Girls and Women in Sports Day Celebration at Patrick Gym. The Catamounts scored 21 points off 14 UMBC turnovers, put away 34 points in the point and gained 29 total points from their bench players.

Women's hockey

Vermont 2, Providence 2 (Vermont wins shootout 1-0)

V: Natalie Mlynkova 1G, 1A. Alaina Tanski 1G. Lily Humphrey 2A. Jessie McPherson 30 saves.

PC: Ashley Clark 1G. Brooke Becker 1G. Hope Walinski 15 saves.

Note: Mlynkova sent the game into overtime with four seconds left in regulation and Humphrey had the only conversion in the shootout as Vermont (11-15-4, 9-11-3) snagged two league points.

Men’s hockey

Vermont 3, UMass Lowell 3 (Vermont wins shootout 2-1)

V: Joel Maatta 1G. Timofei Spitserov 1G. Jens Richards 1G. Isak Walther 2A. Jack Malinski 2A. Gabe Carriere 26 saves.

L: Owen Cole 1G. Filip Fornaa Svensson 1G. Nick Granowicz 1G. Henry Welsch 21 saves.

Note: Chris Theodore and Maatta each struck in the shootout as Vermont snatched two points in successive nights at Lowell. The Catamounts are 11-12-3 overall and 5-8-3 in Hockey East.
