Track and field

Essex Invitational (New England qualifier): Essex junior Kelton Poirier smashed an 11-year state record in the 800-meter run, outlasting St. Johnsbury's Andrew Thornton-Sherman.

Poirier crossed in 1 minute, 52.38 seconds, just ahead of Thornton-Sherman's 1:52.55. The previous state record was 1:54.01, set by Brattleboro's Jacob Ellis at the 2012 Essex Invitational.

Three other Essex Invitational meet records fell Saturday. They are: CVU's Matthew Servin in the 1,500 (3:53.36), Colchester's Ryleigh Garrow in the 100 hurdles (14.88) and the Essex girls 4x400 (4:07.41). Additionally, Fair Haven's Noah Beayon best the Division II state mark in the 100 dash with a winning time of 10.96.
