The Rice boys and Champlain Valley girls continue to headline the Varsity Insider high school basketball power rankings.

1. Rice Memorial High School
Record: 14-1
Last week's ranking: 1
► Not counting Saturday's 62-55 loss to Albany Academy, a powerhouse from New York, Rice has averaged more than 75 points a game in its last seven games, all victories.
2. St. Johnsbury Academy
Record: 13-2
Last week's ranking: 2
► Harry Geng entered last week averaging 23.8 points a game. He upped that scoring output with games of 26 and 28 points, respectively, in double-digit triumphs over Burlington and BFA-St. Albans.

3. Champlain Valley Union High School
Record: 12-2
Last week's ranking: 3
► The Redhawks upped their winning streak to four in a row in Monday's 63-50 win on the road at Burlington. Kyle Eaton and Colby Morehouse each drilled five 3s.
4. Rutland High School
Record: 10-4
Last week's ranking: 5
► Rutland moves up a spot following a grind-it-out, 55-48 win at Essex last week.
5. Hartford High School
Record: 13-1
Last week's ranking: 6
► The Hurricanes own an eight-game winning streak, all by double digits. Last week, they cruised by Brattleboro, 77-37, and Mount Anthony, 63-43.
6. South Burlington High School
Record: 10-6
Last week's ranking: 4
► Following Monday night's defeat to Mount Mansfield, the Wolves enter an eight-day layoff with a three-game losing skid.
7. BFA-St. Albans
Record: 8-7
Last week's ranking: 7
► The Bobwhites saw their two-game winning streak stopped in Monday's 70-53 setback at St. Johnsbury.
8. Montpelier High School
Record: 10-3
Last week's ranking: 9
► Montpelier survived a showdown with rival Spaulding, 67-64, and then knocked Thetford from the ranks of the unbeaten during a 3-0 week.
9. Burlington High School
Record: 7-8
Last week's ranking: 8
► The Seahorses' losing skid hit five games with Monday's home defeat to CVU.
10. Hazen Union High School
Record: 11-2
Last week's ranking: Unranked
► Winners of six of seven games, the 2023 Division III finalists squeeze into the top 10 after Thetford's defeat to Montpelier.

► The Big Red Machine was in full effect last week: 73-39 over Essex and 57-25 over BFA-St. Albans to set the stage for Friday's title-game rematch in Hinesburg vs. St. Johnsbury.
2. St. Johnsbury Academy
Record: 10-2
Last week's ranking: 2
► The Hilltoppers carved out nice wins over BFA (63-57) and Burlington (47-42) to push their winning streak to five games in a row.
3. Burlington High School
Record: 9-3
Last week's ranking: 3
► The Seahorses stay put after a 1-1 week (64-53 win over Mount Mansfield and the defeat at SJA).
4. North Country Union High School
Record: 10-1
Last week's ranking: 4
► After helping North Country to wins over Randolph and Lamoille last week, Sabine Brueck turned in her basketball shoes for track spikes for a day, posting three wins and a second-place finish at the Division I indoor track and field state meet.
5. Mount Mansfield Union High School
Record: 6-3
Last week's ranking: 5
► The Cougars, 1-2 in their last three games, welcome St. Johnsbury to Jericho on Tuesday for a major test.
6. Rutland High School
Record: 9-5
Last week's ranking: 7
► Rutland has built an eight-game winning streak in the month of January.
7. Essex High School
Record: 8-4
Last week's ranking: 6
► After last week's loss to rival CVU, the Hornets will look to rebound vs. BFA on Tuesday night.
8. West Rutland High School
Record: 12-1
Last week's ranking: Unranked
► The reigning VBCA coaches player of the year, Peyton Guay poured in 30 points as West Rutland toppled Windsor at home to vault into the top 10.
9. Hazen Union High School
Record: 11-1
Last week's ranking: Unranked
► Paced by Caitlyn Davison and freshman Kelsie Rivard, the Wildcats have racked up 10 straight victories.
10. BFA-St. Albans
Record: 6-5
Last week's ranking: 9
► It's a three-game losing streak for the Comets. But they battled in the first two losses, to BHS and SJA, before posting a season-low 25 points in the loss at CVU.
