Varsity Insider: Vermont high school boys, girls hockey power rankings (Jan. 30)

The South Burlington boys and BFA-St. Albans girls marched to more victories last week, each extending long winning streaks and reaffirming their spots atop the Varsity Insider high school power rankings.

But other teams were on the move in our top 10s. How did it all shake out? Read on below.

This week's boys power rankings:

(Through Jan. 30)

1. South Burlington High School

Record: 12-1

Last week's ranking: 1

► South Burlington's 10-game winning streak will be put on the line in Wednesday night's showdown vs. Rice. The teams have already split two earlier matchups this season.

2. Rice Memorial High School

Record: 10-1-2

Last week's ranking: 2

► Rice is 8-0-1 in its last eight games, including last week's 5-2 victory over Rutland and a 4-1 decision over Burr and Burton.

3. Colchester High School

Record: 9-3-1

Last week's ranking: 5

► Balanced Colchester skated to nice wins over BFA-St. Albans (4-2) and Mount Mansfield (6-1).

4. Hartford High School

Record: 8-3-2

Last week's ranking: 3

► Hartford has lost three straight games including Saturday's 3-1 defeat at South Burlington.

5. Spaulding High School

Record: 6-5-2

Last week's ranking: 8

► Thanks to a four-game winning streak, the Crimson Tide make this week's biggest jump. Spaulding has won three consecutive 3-2 contests.

6. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 6-5-2

Last week's ranking: 4

► The Bulldogs drop this week following their 0-2-1 stretch.

7. Mount Mansfield Union High School

Record: 7-5-2

Last week's ranking: 6

► The Cougars split their games last week, 3-2 over Essex and a 6-1 setback to Colchester.

8. BFA-St. Albans

Record: 5-6-1

Last week's ranking: 7

► To break a 0-2-1 skid, BFA pounced for a season-high goal splurge in the 7-1 victory at Middlebury on Saturday night.

9. Harwood Union High School

Record: 9-3

Last week's ranking: 9

► Harwood has scored at least seven goals in four games during its seven-game winning streak.

10. Lyndon Institute

Record: 6-2-1

Last week's ranking: 10

► Lyndon's lone game last week was postponed due to weather.

1. BFA-St. Albans

Record: 8-3

Last week's ranking: 1

► A 4-2 victory over Burlington/Colchester and a 10-0 blanking of Middlebury run the Comets' winning streak to eight games in a row.

2. Kingdom Blades

Record: 11-0

Last week's ranking: 2

► The Blades posted their eighth clean sheet of the season in last week's 2-0 shutout of Burr and Burton.

3. Burlington/Colchester

Record: 9-4

Last week's ranking: 4

► Matching 3-1 wins, including last week's triumph over U-32 on senior night, has the Sealakers back on track.

4. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 11-2-1

Last week's ranking: 3

► BBA had won seven of eight games before its road loss to the Kingdom Blades. Upcoming home games with Spaulding and South Burlington are on tap this week.

5. South Burlington High School

Record: 9-4

Last week's ranking: 5

► A 3-0 victory at Hartford highlighted a 2-0 week for the Wolves, who welcome the Kingdom Blades for a big showdown at Cairns Arena on Wednesday.

6. Woodstock Union High School

Record: 8-3-1

Last week's ranking: 6

► Woodstock's four-game unbeaten streak came to an end at home vs. Burlington/Colchester.

7. Essex High School

Record: 4-8-1

Last week's ranking: 10

► A three-game winning streak pushes the Hornets several spots in this week's power rankings.

8. Hartford High School

Record: 10-3-1

Last week's ranking: 7

► The Hurricanes are in the midst of a four-game winless streak.

9. Spaulding High School

Record: 6-6-1

Last week's ranking: 8

► After giving up a lead vs. Hartford, Spaulding salvaged the game with a last-minute goal for the tie.

10. Middlebury Union High School

Record: 8-6

Last week's ranking: 10

► A strange week for the Tigers: They posted a 10-0 win over Harwood but then suffered a 10-0 defeat to BFA.
