Varsity Insider: Vermont high school boys, girls hockey power rankings (Jan. 23)

South Burlington and Rice in boys hockey look the part of title contenders in Division I. BFA-St. Albans and the Kingdom Blades are undefeated against Vermont opponents in girls hockey.

This week's boys power rankings:

(Through Jan. 23)

1. South Burlington High School

Record: 10-1

Last week's ranking: 1

► The Wolves posted their third shutout in five games in last week's 3-0 win at BFA-St. Albans. It was also the Wolves' second clean sheet vs. BFA.

2. Rice Memorial High School

Record: 8-1-2

Last week's ranking: 2

► A late second-period goal propelled Rice to a 5-2 win over Hartford this past Saturday.

3. Hartford High School

Record: 8-1-2

Last week's ranking: 3

► A 5-2 loss to Rice halted Hartford's 10-game unbeaten streak to start the season.

4. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 6-3-1

Last week's ranking: 4

► BBA rides a five-game unbeaten streak entering a week that includes a trip to Rice on Saturday.

5. Colchester High School

Record: 7-3-1

Last week's ranking: 5

► The Lakers were kept in check by No. 1 South Burlington in a 5-1 setback last week. After a home date vs. BFA on Wednesday, the Lakers hit the road for key games at Mount Mansfield and Hartford.

6. Mount Mansfield Union High School

Record: 6-4-2

Last week's ranking: 6

► The Cougars have lost three of four games, including a 3-2 contest at Spaulding.

7. BFA-St. Albans

Record: 4-5-1

Last week's ranking: 7

► The Bobwhites will look to rebound from a 3-0 defeat to South Burlington when they travel to Colchester on Wednesday.

8. Spaulding High School

Record: 4-5-2

Last week's ranking: 8

► Spaulding has carved out back-to-back wins, 3-1 over Middlebury and 3-2 over MMU.

9. Harwood Union High School

Record: 8-3

Last week's ranking: 9

► With a season-high output in a 10-5 triumph at U-32, Harwood pushed winning streak to six games in a row.

10. Lyndon Institute

Record: 6-2-1

Last week's ranking: 10

► Adam Dusek's hat trick in a 3-2 victory over Stowe marched Lyndon to its first win in the new year.

Record: 8-3

Last week's ranking: 1

► The Comets picked a 2-1 win over Burr and Burton a 4-2 triumph over South Burlington to remain undefeated vs. Vermont opponents.

2. Kingdom Blades

Record: 10-0

Last week's ranking: 2

► The Kingdom Blades had gone three-plus games without yielding a goal before Missisquoi struck first. The Blades rallied for a 3-1 win and then went back to work with a 4-0 triumph over Hartford.

3. Burr and Burton Academy

Record: 10-1-1

Last week's ranking: 5

► The power play was on for the Bulldogs vs. Champlain Valley/Mount Mansfield, tallying three with the man-advantage in a 3-1 decision.

4. Burlington/Colchester

Record: 7-2

Last week's ranking: 3

► The Sealakers had a good response from the South Burlington setback with a 3-1 victory over two-time defending Division II champion Woodstock.

5. South Burlington High School

Record: 7-4

Last week's ranking: 7

► On its third attempt this season, South Burlington solved the Sealakers 4-1 for a fourth straight win. The Wolves then dropped a 4-2 contest vs. BFA.

6. Woodstock Union High School

Record: 8-2-1

Last week's ranking: 6

► After halting Hartford's 10-0 start, Woodstock dropped a 3-1 game at home to the Sealakers. Gracelyn Laperle reached 100 career points in the Hartford victory.

7. Hartford High School

Record: 10-2

Last week's ranking: 4

► With the losses to Woodstock and the Kingdom Blades spoiling a perfect start, the Hurricanes will look to return to their winning ways in Barre on Wednesday before welcoming South Burlington this weekend.

8. Spaulding High School

Record: 6-5

Last week's ranking: 8

► Spaulding earned a pair of one-goal wins, 2-1 over Middlebury and 3-2 over U-32, to maintain its position in the top 10.

9. Essex High School

Record: 3-8-1

Last week's ranking: Unranked

► Essex moves into the top 10 following wins over Champlain Valley/Mount Mansfield (2-0) and Middlebury (3-2).

10. Middlebury Union High School

Record: 7-5

Last week's ranking: 9

► After a 2-0-1 stretch, the Tigers fell in one-game losses to Spaulding and Essex.
