Vandegrift soccer's Kyra Jones voted Austin-area Girls Athlete of the Week
Vandegrift soccer player Kyra Jones, a freshman goalkeeper who posted back-to-back shutouts in district matches, was voted the Covert Chevrolet Bastrop Austin-Area Girls Athlete of the Week for Jan. 22-27.
Jones received more than 61% of the vote. McCallum basketball player Emy Chen won the poll for Jan. 15-20.
Jones shut out Manor 7-0 Jan. 23 and then held McNeil scoreless in a 0-0 draw Jan. 26. Cedar Park basketball player Hope Edwards, Navarro's Paulete Mbuangi, Austin High's Kemah Shaw and Lake Travis soccer player Colette Whitsitt also were candidates.
The American-Statesman will have a weekly vote for Girls Athlete of the Week and Boys Athlete of the Week throughout the academic year.
