UWF Football: Argos move up one spot in national rankings after Week 1 victory

Following a dominating Week 1 win, the University of West Florida football team has moved up in the polls.

The Argos slot in at No. 6 (558 points) in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll after a 35-3 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan College. It’s a one-spot improvement for UWF from the preseason poll.

Other Gulf South Conference teams in the Top 25 include Delta State, which stayed at No. 10 (472 points) in the rankings, and the University of West Georgia, which improved two spots from No. 22 to No. 20 (140 points). Delta State is coming off a 48-20 win at Missouri S&T, while West Georgia snuck by Limestone, winning 21-19.

The Argos play West Georgia on Sept. 23 to kickoff UWF’s conference schedule. Delta State hosts UWF on Oct. 21.

Elsewhere in the poll, defending national champions Ferris State – which defeated UWF in the Division II semifinals last season – remains top dog with 29 first-place votes. Rounding out the top five are Colorado School of Mines, Pittsburg State, Angelo State and Northwest Missouri State.

The Argos got their 2023 season started with a commanding defeat of KWC on Friday. Peewee Jarrett threw for 230 yards with one touchdown in the air. He also had eight yards rushing with two touchdowns.

C.J. Wilson ran for 39 yards and scored a touchdown, while Jamontez Woods rounded out the rushing touchdowns with one score and 19 yards. John Jiles led the receivers with 75 yards and one touchdown.

UWF plays at McKendree University at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Lebanon, Illinois. The Bearcats are coming off a 79-14 loss at Tiffin University last weekend.
