UWF Draft: John McMullen becomes second Argo to declare for 2024 NFL Draft, joining Peewee Jarrett

Another University of West Florida football player has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.

John McMullen, a defensive lineman who transferred to UWF for his last season of eligibility, announced Monday on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he is entering the NFL Draft.

In his post, McMullen had “heartfelt appreciation” for the Argos, as well as Northern Michigan University, the school he played for before coming to northwest Florida.

“My journey to this point has been filled with challenges, triumphs and growth,” McMullen said in the post. “I am grateful for every opportunity and setback, as they have collectively shaped me into the player and person I am today.”

McMullen, in his lone season with the Argos, made an incredible impact on defense. A key component in defensive coordinator Kavell Conner’s new four-man front scheme, McMullen took full advantage of the pressure that UWF put on opposing offenses.

McMullen recorded 12.5 sacks for a total loss of 80 yards, and had 22 tackles for loss overall for a loss of 112 yards. He had 51 tackles (34 solo, 17 assisted) total.

UWF allowed an average of 92.7 yards rushing per game – good enough for 13th in the nation in Division II – and opponents only scored seven touchdowns on the ground across the season. The Argos held two teams to negative rushing yards, including McKendree University (minus-32 yards) and Valdosta State (minus-3 yards).

McMullen also recorded three forced fumbles and hurried the quarterback six times throughout the season.

As far as accolades, McMullen got his fair share after a strong season with the Argos. Not only was he named the Gulf South Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year – leading the conference by almost double the next player – McMullen also picked up GSC First-Team Defense honors.

McMullen was named All-Region First Team Defense for NCAA Super Region 2 by the Conference Commissioner’s Association and was also named an All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

“Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey thus far,” McMullen said. “Your support and believe in me have fueled my aspirations.”

McMullen joins quarterback Peewee Jarrett, who declared for the 2024 NFL Draft on Dec. 1.
