Panama sends USMNT out of Gold Cup in penalties

The United States men's national team ran out of luck in Wednesday's Gold Cup semifinal versus Panama, falling to Los Canaleros in penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Scoreless after 90 minutes, the Yanks needed a Jesus Ferreira 105th-minute goal just to get to penalties, as Ivan Anderson beat the U.S. line to give Panama a 1-0 lead in extra time.

Panama had 56 percent of the ball and five of the game's eight shots on target, and BJ Callaghan will feel the Yanks were fortunate to get to penalties.

Ferreira missed the USMNT's first penalty but Matt Turner saved a Panama offering. Unfortunately for the Americans, Cristian Roldan saw his penalty saved by Orlando Mosquera and Panama was off to its first Gold Cup Final in 10 years.

The U.S. flipped its roster after its Europe-heavy side won the CONCACAF Nations League, and now a team largely full of MLS talent is bidding to get the program its eighth Gold Cup.

Mexico's already on eight and plays a resurgent Jamaica in the other semifinal. Panama will meet the winner at 7:30pm ET Sunday in what will be Los Canaleros' third final. Panama lost the 2005 and 2013 editions to the USMNT.
