URI establishes Devon Quigley Courage Award to honor former player who suffered brain injury

The Rhode Island Golf Program has announced the establishment of the Devon Quigley Courage Award in honor of former player Devon Quigley who died at the age of 39 on Oct. 28 from long-term complications of a 2011 car accident that left him with a traumatic brain injury. Despite an initial prediction that he had zero chance of survival, Devon spent over a decade inspiring all who knew him or even heard of his story.

The award will be given to a member of the URI Golf Community who exhibited the courage and dignity in the face of challenge or illness that Devon did from the time of his accident to the time of his death.

Devon, who was an integral part of the golf team during his time at URI, was the son of URI's greatest player of all time, Dana Quigley. Besides his father, who was his regular golfing partner, Devon left behind his mother Charlotte, who never left his side, stepmother Ange, sister Nicole and her husband Thomas, and his niece Evelyn, along with a legion of faithful friends, teammates, fellow golfers, and admirers.

"Devon was the bright light in every situation," URI Head Coach Gregg Burke said. "People were just drawn to him. He was the consummate teammate and an important member of some of the very best teams URI has ever had. Devon's unbridled enthusiasm and optimism showed in his own game as he found a way to make terrific scores from unlikely spots on the golf course. But his light was brightest after his accident. Devon is missed tremendously, but he inspired and will continue to inspire all of us."

In remembrance of Devon Quigley's life, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to the URI Golf Ram Par Fund which supports the URI men's golf program.
