Urban Meyer, Trevor Lawrence give conflicting answers on failed fourth-down attempt

On fourth and goal with James Robinson sitting on a career-high rushing day, the Jaguars decided to put Carlos Hyde in the game to attempt to pick up a touchdown they needed to claw back into the game.

Hyde was swallowed in the backfield by a gang of Titans, ending any hopes at a comeback by Jacksonville.

At the time, Robinson had more than 100 yards in the game and was averaging more than eight yards a carry.

The play call was questionable - same as last week against the Bengals - and the postgame explanation was even more confusing.

Coach Urban Meyer said that he doesn’t micromanage personnel, though he admitted he probably should have in this situation, and didn’t know if Robinson had an injury at the time.

During Robinson’s press conference he didn’t mention an injury, he said that he trusted his teammates to get the job done.

Then, when asked about the potential of a quarterback sneak from inches away from the end zone, Meyer said Trevor Lawrence wasn’t comfortable with the play.

“I don't micromanage who's in the game. I should have -- James is running really hard, but so is Carlos. I've got to go find out if something was dinged up with James on that situation. And the quarterback sneak, he's not quite comfortable with that yet.

“We've been practicing that. I know that might sound silly, but when you've never done it, it's something that we need to continue to make that, so you can make that call in that critical situation.”

During Lawrence’s media availability, he said that he was in fact comfortable with the play call.

“No, I feel comfortable. Obviously, I haven't really ran it before in a game, but I feel comfortable. It's something we've worked. We trust our guys up front, we trust our backs in that situation.

“Obviously, I'd love to get in there, but if we make the play, it's like no one says anything, but it's a TFL, and that doesn't look great obviously. So, we all can get better. But no, a QB sneak is something we can all get to and I feel comfortable with.”

It’s hard to win a game when you’re trailing a minute into the contest. That’s the predicament Jacksonville found themselves in when Dan Arnold fumbled on the third play of the game.

Tennessee scooped the ball off the turf and walked into the end zone to put the game’s first points on the board.

The Jaguars never led, and the closest chance to tying "slipped" away, when Matthew Wright slipped on the potential game-tying extra point at 7-6.

Trevor Lawrence finished the game 22-33 for 273 yards, one touchdown and an interception on the final play of the game.

He also added 28 yards on the ground on seven carries and a rushing touchdown for the second consecutive week.

Robinson finished with 149 yards on eight carries, a career high for the second-year running back. He had more rushing yards at halftime (110) than he had in any other full game to this point.

With the loss, the Jaguars have now lost 20 consecutive games.

A figure that's hard to grasp even for players who've been along for all of them.

"You can't. You can't wrap your head around that," Robinson said after the game. "We've got to find a way to win. We're a really good team. Obviously, our record doesn't show it, but we've got a lot of great guys in the locker room, and we've just got to find something that's going to work for us."
