Upstart Rogers High softball team leaving 25-game losing streak behind, starting anew

After losing 25 consecutive games, the Rogers High School softball team now has won two of its last three. The Vikings upset the second-place Shea/Tolman co-op squad on Monday.

The Tiverton High softball team snapped its two-game skid with a mercy-rule victory over Exeter-West Greenwich. Max Nasser and Nick Phelan helped guide the Middletown High golf team to wins over Rogers and Mount Hope at Newport Country Club.

The Portsmouth High girls lacrosse team won its second straight, while the Rogers High boys lacrosse squad captured its eighth straight win and stayed unbeaten and atop Division-III. Landon Rodrigues continued to pile up wins for the Portsmouth boys track team.

Winning pitcher Higgins allowed just four hits and struck out six as the Vikings upset the second-place Shea/Tolman co-op squad 16-3 on Monday at Toppa Field.

Palmer had a double, single and four RBIs and Tess Margolis had a double and single and two RBIs as the Vikings climbed to 2-7 in the Division-III standings while dropping the Tigers to 6-3.

Max Nasser and Nick Phelan, Middletown golf

Nasser earned medalist honors and the Islanders had three golfers among the top six finishers overall as they defeated Rogers 200-234 and Mount Hope 200-219 at Newport Country Club on Monday.

Nasser shot 43 to lead the pack while Phelan came in with a 49 to finish second overall and freshman Nate Sweeney shot 53 and placed sixth.

Mackenzie Oliveira and Sadie Pickering, Tiverton softball

Senior Oliveira and sophomore Pickering helped guide the offense as the Tigers beat host Exeter-West Greenwich 12-1 in five innings to snap a two-game losing streak in Division-III.

Pickering ripped a pair of doubles and finished with two RBIs while Oliviera had two singles, two walks and scored three runs. Abby DeMello pitched four innings, allowed three hits and struck out three and freshman reliever Lia Doster fanned one batter in the final inning for the Tigers (6-2).

Dylan Walker and Patrick Stahl, Rogers boys lacrosse

The two seniors helped keep the Vikings unbeaten in Division-IV as Rogers downed North Smithfield 8-4 on Monday at Braga Park. Walker scored four goals – one more than teammate Jack Mathews – and goalie Stahl made nine saves as the Vikings (8-0) maintained their hold on first place while dropping the Northmen to 4-3.

Elly Skeels and Emily Bobola, Portsmouth girls lacrosse

Skeels and Bobola combined for seven second-half goals as the Patriots broke from a 7-7 halftime tie and downed host South Kingstown 15-10 in a Division-I game on Monday night.

Skeels finished with five goals, Bobola had four, Kaitlin Roche had a hat trick and an assist, Sophia Sebolt netted two goals, Talus Nightingale had one goal and Margaux Boneu contributed three assists for Portsmouth (4-5).

McCormack and Toner had the top two scores among Rogers golfers but the Vikings could not come up with a victory on their Newport Country Club home course as they fell to Middletown 200-234 and to Mount Hope 219-234 on Monday. McCormack shot 52 which was fifth best among the field and Toner shot 55 to finish seventh.

Elijah Neal and Neil Porter, Rogers boys track

Neal teamed with Dayvon London, Dom Bothur and Fletcher Hanson to win the 4x400 relay and also won the high jump with a 6-feet leap as the Vikings beat St. Patrick Academy 143-1 and fell to Barrington 115.5-32.5 on Monday.

Porter was tops in the javelin (139 feet, 2 inches), Devan-ta Campbell won the triple jump (39-1), and Kaden Thomas won the shot put (44-5) as the Vikings completed the dual-meet season with a 7-3 Eastern Division record.

Landon Rodrigues and Logan Quinn, Portsmouth boys track

Portsmouth athletes compiled more than 20 personal-best efforts as the host Patriots downed St. Raphael 116-36, Shea 133-19 and Tolman 137-14 on Monday to complete the Eastern Division dual-meet season with a 9-1 record, its best mark in 10 years.

Rodrigues won four events for the third time in four dual meets as he captured the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.4 seconds, the 300 hurdles (41.9), the long jump (19 feet, 6 inches) and the triple jump (38-9 ½). Quinn was a double winner as he took the discus with a 105 feet, 3 inch toss and the hammer (134-8).

Helana Kesson and Keegan Dutelle, Tiverton golf

Barrington golfers filled eight of the top 10 spots as they defeated East Providence 155-178 and Tiverton 155-213 on Monday at Montaup Country Club.

Barrington’s Cole Vieira took medalist honors as he shot 37 on the par-36 front nine at Montaup. Kesson and Dutelle each shot 51 to lead the Tigers.

Griffin Kleinknecht and Keaton O’Shea, Middletown boys lacrosse

Kleinknecht netted four goals and O’Shea had three goals and three assists as the host Islanders broke loose for a 15-7 win over Pilgrim on Monday.

Brady Venancio contributed three goals and two assists, Liam Fitzgerald had two goals and three assists and goalie Christian Berluti was held scoreless but was credited with 19 saves as Middletown climbed to 7-2 in the Division-II standings.
