20-14 Loss to Cal
In a game that went down to the wire in Berkeley, Calif., UNLV fell to California by six points, 20-14.
This turned out to be UNLV’s first loss of the season. The Rebels dropped to 1-1 on the season. On the other hand, the Golden Bears moved to a 2-0 record.
California running back Jaydn Ott started off the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run. The Golden Bears led the Rebels, 7-0, with 11:08 to go in the first quarter. Ott helped extend California’s lead to 14 points with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Jack Plummer at the 3:52 mark in the first.
UNLV fought back in the second quarter with a Doug Brumfield toss that Kyle Williams ran for an 11-yard touchdown. The Rebels cut the lead in half, 14-7. This was Williams’ sixth career touchdown.

UNLV picked off Plummer in the red zone with 8:18 left in the first half. Plummer threw his second interception of the season. With 1:58 remaining before halftime, California kicker Dario Longhetto tacked on three points to the lead. It was a 17-7 contest at the half.
Longhetto added to Cal’s lead with a field goal from 30 yards out with 8:21 on the clock in the third quarter. UNLV running back Aidan Robbins capped off an excellent drive with a 31-yard touchdown run into the right side of the end zone with 7:04 left in the third quarter. The Rebels trailed by six points, 20-14.

Following the score from Robbins, UNLV successfully recovered an onside kick from Daniel Gutierrez with 7:03 remaining in the third. The Rebels failed to score after getting the ball back.

Cal missed a 43-yard field goal with 8:06 left in the game, which would have extended the lead for the Golden Bears. The score remained 20-14 in California’s favor.
With under three minutes left in the fourth quarter, UNLV went for it on fourth and goal and were stopped on the goal line. UNLV received another possession with under two minutes left in the game. Brumfield was sacked and eventually threw a game-ending interception as time expired. California held on for the 20-14 win.
UNLV will be back in action against North Texas on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 12 p.m. PT. in Las Vegas.
