Union City track comes through in clutch, sweeps Big 8 dual

MAPLE VALLEY - The Union City Charger track and field team traveled to Maple Valley Tuesday for their first Big 8 conference dual meet of the season. Union City was able to secure the sweep in both the boys’ and girls' portions of the event, and in exciting fashion.

What Happened?

The Chargers came through in the clutch versus Concord on Tuesday, as the dual came down to the final race of the night, the 1600-meter relay. Union City won the race with a team of Nathanial Maurer, Riley Laird, Cohen Burdick, and Hunter Sinke in a time of 3 minutes, 37.28 seconds, three seconds faster than the Concord team who finished in a time of 3 minutes, 40.13 seconds, giving Union City the dual meet win.

Dual Meet Stars

Senior Nathaniel Maurer swept the hurdle events, winning the 110-meter hurdles in 16.73 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 43.55 seconds.

Junior Cohen Burdick also took a pair of wins, winning the 800 in 2 minutes, 20.39 seconds and the 1600 in 5 minutes, 1.14 seconds.

Senior Logan Cole also took a pair of wins, dominating down in the pits with wins in both throwing events. Cole won the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 5.25 seconds, and the discus with a throw of 139 feet, 1.5 inches.

Also taking wins for Union City were Hunter Sinke, first place in the 400 in a time of 53.50 seconds; Jason Shoop, first place in the 3200 in a time of 11 minutes, 50.04 seconds; the 800 relay team of Maurer, Rick Austin, Laird, and Sinke, first place in a time of 1 minute, 35.09 seconds; and the 3200 relay team of Burdick, Shoop, Kenny Case, and Noah June, first place in a time of 9 minutes, 34.28 seconds.

Top Finishers

Also helping the Union City effort with a top three finish was Laird, third place in the 400; Shoop, third place in the 800 and second place in the 1600; June, third place in the 3200; David Wilson, third place in the 110 hurdles; Kenny Case, third place in the 300 hurdles; the 400 relay team of Caden Hughes, Kent Robbins, Rick Austin and Laird, second place; Gavin Kelly, third place in the shot put; and Robbins, third place in the high jump.

What Happened?

The Union City girls also saw their meet come down to the final few races versus Concord, and again the Chargers came up clutch.

Union City took the top two spots in the 3200-meter run, with freshman Allison Gautsche winning with a time of 13 minutes, 33.29 seconds followed by junior teammate Skyler Fraley in second place in a time of 13 minutes, 39.12 seconds to take the late lead.

The Chargers wrapped up the victory with a win in the 1600 relay, as the team of Willow Austin, Attica Hoath, Nevada Gillons, and Parker Williams won in a time of 4 minutes, 40.66 seconds to seal the win.

Dual Meet Stars

Junior Nevada Gillons was the only Charger to win multiple events, winning the 100 hurdles in a time of 17.00 seconds and the long jump in a jump of 14 feet, 10 inches.

Also taking wins for Union City were Gautsche in the 3200; the 3200-relay team of Alissa Skirka, Parker Williams, Gautsche, and Fraley, first place in a time of 11 minutes, 8.32 seconds; and Addison Miller, first place in the pole vault with a vault of 7 feet, 0 inches.

Top Finishers

Aiding the Union City win with a top three finish in their respective events was Gillons, second place in the 100; Attica Hoath, second place in the 200; Parker Williams, second place in the 400; Willow Austin, third place in the 400; Alissa Skirka, second place in the 800 and third place in the 1600; Carly Smith, third place in the 800; Skyler Fraley, second place in the 1600 and second place in the 3200; Alaina Labar, second place in the 100 hurdles; Kylie Creech, third place in the 100 hurdles and second place in the 300 hurdles; the 400 relay team of Schwark, Hoath, Katie Johnson, and Miller, second place; the 800 relay team of Austin, Miller, Johnson, and Hoath, second place; Naomi Schwark, second place in the high jump; Lilly Eyre, third place in the high jump; Kiera Taylor, second place in the pole vault; and Allison Gautsche, third place in the pole vault.
