UNC football secondary takes hit with injury in camp

The North Carolina Tar Heels football program entered the 2023 season with question marks at defensive back. Now those question marks are a little bigger in terms of depth.

Per Inside Carolina, defensive back Lejond Cavazos has suffered a lower body injury that will require surgery. Cavazos was spotted on crutches during Tuesday’s practice in Chapel Hill.

Here is what Adam Smith of Inside Carolina wrote on the situation:

“Cavazos was leaning on crutches and not participating Tuesday at the Koman Practice Complex, as the Tar Heels held their sixth practice of training camp and worked out in full pads. Sources told Inside Carolina the junior Cavazos has suffered a right-knee meniscus injury.”

After transferring to North Carolina from Ohio State, Cavazos started in the final three games of the season for the Tar Heels a year ago. With multiple players in the secondary leaving via the transfer portal after last season, Cavazos entered this year as a backup at defensive back.

North Carolina’s depth takes a hit with this injury and the hope now is it can get through the rest of camp without any more major injuries.
