Unbeaten Centennial softball seeded No. 1 for state playoffs

LAS CRUCES - The Centennial softball team - state runner-ups from last season and unbeaten this year - were seeded No. 1 in the Class 5A state tournament.

The Hawks will play No. 16 Capital in the first round on Friday at 6 p.m., at the Field of Dreams Softball Complex. The eight first round winners advance to the double elimination tournament in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho on May 12 with the big school final on May 13 at the University of New Mexico.

Centennial finished the season 26-0 and 15-0 in district play, outscoring its district opponents 193-17.

Mayfield was seeded No. 9 and will play at No. 8 Albuquerque in the first round and Organ Mountain was seeded No. 10 and will play at No. 7 Cibola in the first round.

The Centennial baseball team swept a Thursday doubleheader against Las Cruces High to win District 3-5A at 13-2.

Both teams will host best-of-three first-round series on Friday-Saturday at the Field of Dreams Baseball Complex.

The Hawks were seeded No. 6 in Class 5A and will host No. 11 Farmington. Las Cruces was seeded No. 8 and will host No. 9 Rio Grande.

Organ Mountain was seeded No. 13 and will play at No. 4 Volcano Vista and Mayfield is the No. 15 seed and will play at No. 2 La Cueva.

The big school quarterfinals are May 11 in Albuquerque and the final is May 13 at the University of New Mexico at noon.

Mesilla Valley Christian School was seeded No. 4 in Class A and will play No. 5 Gateway Christian in a single game quarterfinal on Wednesday with the winner advancing to play No. 1 Logan.

In the Class 3A bracket, Hatch Valley was seeded No. 8 and will host No. 9 Zuni in a first round series Friday-Saturday with the winner advancing to play top-seeded Sandia Prep in the quarterfinals.

Santa Teresa was seeded No. 7 in the Class 4A bracket and will host No. 10 Hope Christian in the first round.
