UDM's Antoine Davis wins second straight Horizon League Player of Year award

What do you get the player who’s got everything? (Other than “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s career NCAA scoring record, that is …)

How about a Horizon League Player of the Year Award — again?

Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis, who is chasing Maravich’s 3,667 points with a Horizon tourney game at home against Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday night, was named the conference’s top player for the second consecutive season. Davis leads the nation in scoring average (28.1 points) as well as total points (870), total field goals made (282), total points (870), total 3-pointers made (149) and made 3-pointers per game (4.8). The Titans retired the No. 0 jersey of the school’s, and the Horizon’s, career scoring leader on Saturday.

HORIZON TOURNAMENTS:Here's who OU, UDM men and women will face

The fifth-year guard needs 64 points to break Maravich’s career scoring record (3,667) set over three seasons (1967-70) at LSU, but he’ll likely need a UDM win over the Mastodons at Calihan Hall on Tuesday to get it. The Titans swept Purdue Fort Wayne this season, with Davis averaging 27 points against the Mastodons. A UDM win would set up a quarterfinal matchup Thursday on the road against Youngstown State, Milwaukee or Cleveland State, which gave up an average of 23.5, 31.5 and 28 points a game to Davis this season, respectively.

Davis was also named to the men’s first-team All-Horizon squad. Joining him there is Oakland guard Jalen Moore, who averaged 19.6 points, 5.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game in his third season with the Golden Grizzlies. This is his third time as an All-Horizon player, including his second time as a first-teamer. Moore and OU will face Northern Kentucky in the Horizon quarters on Thursday night. The rest of the first-team men: Cleveland State’s Tristan Enaruna, Wright State’s Trey Calvin and Youngstown State’s Dwayne Cohill.

Moore wasn’t the only Golden Grizzly honored by the conference on Monday: Brooke Quarles-Daniels, who averaged 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds a game, was named Freshman of the Year on the women’s side. She is the first Oakland woman to win the award. Quarles-Daniels, who starred at L’Ance Creuse North last season, also made second-team All-Horizon as well as the conference’s All-Freshman team. The Golden Grizzlies host Wright State in the first round of the conference tourney on Tuesday night. Quarles-Daniels is joined on the freshman team by UDM’s Amaya Burch, who averaged 7.6 points in 22.5 minutes a game this season. The UDM women finished last in the conference for the first time since 2007-08; the Titans visit No. 6-seed Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday night.

OU’s Trey Townsend, who averaged 16.4 points a game this season, made the men’s second-team All-Horizon squad.

Youngstown State’s Jerrod Calhoun won Coach of the Year, Wright State’s Brandon Noel was Freshman of the Year, Milwaukee’s Ahmad Noel was Defensive Player of the Year and Northern Kentucky’s Trevon Faulkner won Sixth Player of the Year.

Cleveland State’s Destiny Leo, who averaged 19.3 points a game, was named women’s Player of the Year and leads the first-team All-Horizon squad. Joining her are Green Bay’s Sydney Levy, IUPUI’s Rachel Kent, Northern Kentucky’s Lindsey Duvall and Youngstown State’s Lilly Ritz, who also won Defensive Player of the Year. Deja Williams is the women’s Sixth Player of the Year, and Green Bay’s Kevin Borseth won Coach of the Year for the eighth time in the conference. Borseth, who coached the Michigan women for five seasons (2007-12) is in his 11th season of his second stint with the Phoenix. He previously coached Green Bay from 1998-07.
