After Tyrod Taylor injury, Giants sign former Bills QB Matt Barkley

Matt Barkley is back in the NFL with the Giants.

According to Giants Wire, the 33-year-old former Bills quarterback has signed to their practice squad.

The transaction comes after a few other recent updates.

He sustained an elbow injury during the preseason and was placed on injured reserve. At the end of the summer, Barkley was released by the Bills via injury settlement.

Then Barkley had had a workout with the Giants on Oct. 19. He was not signed at that time even though starter Daniel Jones had already missed playing time due to a neck injury.

Then in Week 8, the Giants lost another former Bills QB, Tyrod Taylor. He sustained an injury to his ribs and will not play this upcoming weekend.

Tommy DeVito filled in for Taylor, and even though Jones is now back, Giants head coach Brian Daboll evidently wanted some more security and signed Barkley likely because of the familiarity he has with him from their time together with the Bills.

It’s unclear what the injury settlement the Bills came to with Barkley. After his release, Shane Buechele was signed. He’s currently doing Barkley’s old job of being the third-string quarterback for the Bills on the team’s practice squad.

Perhaps the settlement made it so Barkley couldn’t yet come back to the Bills. Maybe they like the younger Buechele more.

Regardless, he’s with the Giants now.
