Tyler Mawhinney, playing here in the Junior Players Championship on Sept. 1, posted the lowest district golf score among First Coast players with a 64 at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club.

Fleming Island’s Tyler Mawhinney stole the show among area players in district golf tournaments last week.

Mawhinney, a sophomore, fired a school-record 8-under-par 64 at the St. Johns Golf and Country Club to beat teammates Jaylen Abbas by five shots and Emmett Kuhlenkamp by six to lead the Golden Eagles to a resounding 33-shot victory over Nease in the District 3-3A tournament.

Mawhinney shot 5-under 31 on the front nine, then bounced back from a double-bogey at No. 12 to birdie his last four holes. He posted the second-lowest individual score in the state, across all classifications, second only to a 63 at Grand Palms in Pembroke Pines by Lorenzo Rodriguez of Miami Belen Jesuit in District 13-1A.

Fleming Island, which also set a school record for 18 holes with its 8-under 280, wasn’t the only team who won their district title by healthy margins. Ponte Vedra’s girls won the District 3-2A tournament by 70 shots. The Beachside girls won District 4-2A by 85. And the Lake City Columbia girls won by triple-digits, topping second-place Crawfordville Wakulle in District 2-2A by 100 shots.

The regional tournaments will be Oct. 30-31, with 14 First Coast girls teams and 13 boys teams advancing, along with 13 girls individual qualifiers and 13 boys individuals for a total of 161 players involved. The top two from each region and the top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the state tournaments next month.

In addition, eight at-large teams and eight at-large individuals in each class will advance to the state tournament, based on the FHSAA’s iWanamaker index.
