Two-time defending champ Sioux Falls Christian leads Vermillion by four shots in team race
RAPID CITY — Aberdeen Roncalli freshman Claire Crawford grabbed the opening day individual lead and Sioux Falls Christian got its quest for a third-straight team title off and running on Monday in the state Class A girls golf tournament at the Meadowbrook Golf Course.
Crawford, who tied for sixth last spring, shot a 9-under 81 to grab a one-shot leader over St. Thomas More freshman Rylan Horning. Sioux Falls Christian freshman Tori Peterson and Vermillion junior Stephanie Carr each shot 83s, seventh-grader Katie Betsworth of Dakota Valley an 84. Canton senior and defending champion Olivia Sorlie of Canton followed at 85 along with Sioux Falls Christian senior Claire Lamfers and junior Cecelia VanDenTop and Vermillion seventh-grader Taylor Reuvers.
Sioux Falls Christian led the team standings with a 339, four shots ahead of defending state runner-up Vermillion. St. Thomas More is third at 359.
The tourney concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday. The top six teams and 25 individuals medal.
