Which two teams enter the South Bend area baseball power rankings for the first time?

This past week was interesting for several South Bend area high school baseball teams. Some teams surged, while others had up-and-down weeks against strong competition.

The results leave this week’s power rankings in-flux somewhat. Here’s a look at the area top 10, which has multiple changes from last week’s list.

1. Penn Kingsmen (11-5, 4-0 NIC)

Previous ranking: 1. Last week’s results: def. Washington, 19-1; def. Elkhart, 5-0; def. Mishawaka, 4-3; lost doubleheader to Lake Central, 4-0 and 8-0. This week’s schedule: Monday at Adams, Friday vs. Andrean

It wasn’t great that Penn was shutout twice to Lake Central, but the Indians are showing to be one of the best teams in the state so far. The Kingsmen still control their destiny for a conference title entering the week.

2. South Bend Adams Eagles (10-1, 3-0 NIC)

Previous ranking: 2. Last week’s results: def. New Prairie, 3-0; def. Riley, 15-1; swept doubleheader at Homestead, 6-0 and 14-6. This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Penn, Wednesday at Saint Joseph, Saturday at Niles

The Eagles are rolling into undoubtably the biggest week of their season so far. Adams’ pitchers have a combined 1.77 ERA, proving to be the team’s strength through the first three weeks.

3. New Prairie Cougars (9-2, 1-2 NIC)

Previous ranking: 3. Last week’s results: lost to Adams, 3-0; def. Boone Grove, 10-1; def. Fairfield, 12-6. This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Marian, Wednesday at Washington, Thursday vs. Culver Academy, Friday at LaPorte

The Cougars stay at No. 3 despite a loss to Adams. They picked up a solid win over Fairfield to keep going an impressive season so far. Marian, Culver and LaPorte are nice tests for them this week.

4. South Bend Saint Joseph Huskies (8-3, 1-2 NIC)

Previous ranking: 4. Last week’s results: lost to Marian, 17-9; def. Washington, 28-1; def. Guerin Catholic, 10-0; lost to Lafayette Central Catholic, 12-2; def. Highland, 7-0. This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Bremen, Wednesday vs. Adams.

It was a wild week for the Huskies, to say the least. A loss to rival Marian stung, but they were able to shutdown No. 3 (3A) Guerin Friday night as part of the Catholic Classic hosted by LCC. Jayce Lee entered the week with zero RBI — he now has 14.

5. Mishawaka Cavemen (6-3, 3-0 NLC)

Previous ranking: 10. Last week’s results: def. Plymouth, 6-3; def. Wawasee, 6-5; lost to Penn, 4-3; def. Goshen, 13-5; def. Riley, 10-0. This week’s schedule: Monday at Concord, Wednesday vs. NorthWood, Friday at Northridge, Saturday at Niles

It was a really good week for the Cavemen, in part because they played more games in the last seven days than they had in the first two weeks of the season. They could’ve gone 5-0 as well, as they let an early three-run lead on Penn slip away. Cooper Pritchett, Shawn Nowacki, Will Hartzke and Trey DeBroka are all batting .440 or better through the first nine games.

6. Mishawaka Marian Knights (7-4, 2-1 NIC)

Previous ranking: 7. Last week’s results: def. Saint Joseph, 17-9; lost to Jimtown, 7-3; def. Edwardsburg, 11-1. This week’s schedule: Monday at New Prairie, Wednesday vs. Riley, Saturday vs. Bishop Dwenger at 10 a.m. and Illiana Christian at 3 p.m.

Another team with an interesting week of results, as a huge win for the Knights against their rivals was followed by a loss to a surging Jimtown team. Their upcoming week is bookended by two teams ranked No. 5 in their respective classes in the coaches poll in New Prairie (3A) and Illiana Christian (2A).

7. Concord Minutemen (7-3, 3-0 NLC)

Previous ranking: NR. Last week’s results: def. NorthWood, 2-1 (8 innings); def. Elkhart, 10-3; def. Northridge, 8-5; def. Fairfield, 4-2. This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Mishawaka, Wednesday at Goshen, Friday vs. Warsaw.

Not sure how many people had the Minutemen going unbeaten last week on their bingo card, but they rattled off four impressive victories to make their presence felt on these power rankings. It’s been a balanced effort for Concord so far, led by sophomore Alex Kridler’s .407 average and eight RBI.

8. NorthWood Panthers (7-3, 2-1 NLC)

Previous ranking: 6. Last week’s results: lost to Concord, 2-1; def. Northridge, 3-1; def. Tippecanoe Valley, 3-2; def. Wawasee, 10-3. This week’s schedule: Monday at Warsaw, Wednesday at Mishawaka, Thursday at Jimtown, Friday at Plymouth, Saturday at Bremen.

The schedule this week is brutal for the Panthers, with all five of their games on the road — four of which have winning records. It feels like we’ll learn a lot about NorthWood by the time this stretch concludes.

9. Jimtown Jimmies (9-4, 2-2 NIC)

Previous ranking: NR. Last week’s results: lost to John Glenn, 3-1; def. Bethany Christian, 6-0; def. Marian, 7-3; def. DeKalb, 13-0; def. Wawasee, 11-4. This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Riley, Wednesday at Bremen, Thursday vs. NorthWood, Friday vs. West Noble.

Here come the Jimmies. After a setback to start the week, Jimtown won four in a row, including a signature victory over Marian. Ben McAlister is batting .438 for the season and also pitched the complete game in the victory over the Knights.

10. Fairfield Falcons (9-4, 5-0 NECC)

Previous ranking: 8. Last week’s results: def. Garrett, 13-3; def. Lakeland, 1-0; lost to New Prairie, 12-6; lost to Concord, 4-2. This week’s schedule: NECC Tournament, starting Tuesday at Prairie Heights.

A couple of non-conference losses to quality teams, plus the rise of Concord and Jimtown, see the Falcons slip a few spots this week. It’s conference tournament week for the NECC, which means Fairfield could play up to three games if it keeps winning.

Honorable mentions: Elkhart (7-4; ranked 5th last week), LaPorte (7-5; ranked 9th last week), Bremen (6-3), John Glenn (6-3-1).
