Two keys to the Colts slow start

After the first quarter of the season is over the Indianapolis Colts sit at 1-3.

Lucky for them they play in the AFC South. Division leader Houston sits at just 3-1, while both the Jags and the Titans are 1-3 like the Colts.

For as bad as the entire team has played, being only two games out this early on is okay. No need to hit that big red panic button. Well… just yet.

Andrew Luck is on track to be sacked 60 times this season and hit about a boat load more. The defense is in shambles and at this point would give up over 400 yards to the 2008 Lions.

But here the Colts are. Sitting just two games back of the division lead.

The Colts are scoring 27 points per game, tied for 7th in the league. Not bad for a team that started three rookies on the offensive line last week, and has been missing its number 2 wideout since Week 2.

As for the defense, this is where things get worse. The Colts are giving up 31.3 point per game, 30th in the league. At this pace right now they are on track to give up over 500 point this season. That would place them 3rd all-time Baltimore in 81 (533) and the Giants in 66 (501).

You cannot expect to win many games going forward when the you need your offense to put up 30 plus points per game.

Owner Jim Irsay and the rest of the office have already shown that poor performances will not be tolerated. As defensive “starters” Antonio Cromartie and Sio Moore were released earlier today.

The defense must step up, but with so many holes it will have to almost be patch work by first year coordinator Ted Monachino.

The next three weeks however should determine how the season will unfold. Games against the Bears, Texans and Titans are all winnable.

Can they fix their problems?
