Two former Packers players the Jets brought in this season to team with Aaron Rodgers have already been cut

After the way this NFL season has gone, the New York Jets will probably take a pass on any former Green Bay Packers players in the immediate future.

It's been well-documented the number of ex-Packers players or coaches who joined the Jets either before or after the Aaron Rodgers trade this spring and how poorly it's gone for them.

But it hasn't even been a full season and two of those players have already been released after disappointing years.

Safety Adrian Amos was the first to part ways, a departure that was called "mutual," over the weekend. Then on Tuesday, quarterback Tim Boyle was released.

Adrian Amos had fewest tackles in his career with Jets

Amos signed a one-year deal worth up to $4 million in June. He called the Jets "the right fit" for him.

It appears it was anything but that.

The 30-year-old was a starter for the Packers across his four years and was coming off a career-high 102 tackles in 2022. But in New York, he was no longer starting and finished his 11-game Jets tenure with 23 total tackles (a career low), zero sacks and zero interceptions.

However, Amos has already found a new home, per NFL Insider Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. On Tuesday, he signed with the Texans, which is actually the Jets' opponent Sunday.

Jets cut Tim Boyle after he started two games

As for Boyle, who last played in Green Bay in 2020, he was cut by the Jets after a couple of ineffective performances for a Jets offense that's one of the worst in the NFL.

Boyle, 29, was promoted to starter when coach Robert Saleh benched Zach Wilson, who was thrust back into the starting role after Rodgers tore his Achilles in the team's first game. Wilson was the team's No. 2 overall draft pick in 2021 as the Jets were searching for their long-term answer at quarterback.

That didn't pan out, so the Jets put all their hope in Rodgers to end the NFL's longest playoff drought. That, of course, didn't pan out either when the now 40-year-old Rodgers was injured four plays into his 19th NFL season. Since then, it has become a quarterback carousel for a team in the midst of a five-game losing streak.

In three games, including two starts, Boyle was 48-of-77 (62%) for 360 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions for a 56.2 rating. He was sacked nine times.

The Jets lost to the Atlanta Falcons, 13-8, on Sunday to fall to 4-8, a game in which Boyle completed 56% of his passes for 148 yards and no touchdown passes. The Jets' only points were two field goals and a safety from the defense. The Jets' offense is coordinated by former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was hired ahead of the Rodgers trade after being fired as head coach of the Denver Broncos 15 games into his first year there.

Boyle's 4.7 yards per completion is the third-worst of any quarterback in 2023.

Jets now turning to Brett Rypien at quarterback

The quarterback the Jets are bringing in now is journeyman Brett Rypien, whose 4.5 yards per pass in his two games in 2023 is second worst in the NFL. CBS Sports' Senior NFL Insider Josiana Anderson was first to report the Rypien signing on Tuesday.

Packers fans should Rypien. The 27-year-old, who will be on his third team in two months, actually started for the Los Angles Rams against the Packers on Nov. 5 with Matthew Stafford injured. Rypien was 13-of-28 for 130 yards, zero touchdowns, one interception and two fumbles as the Rams struggled to move the ball in the 20-3 loss to the Packers.

Rypien was cut by the Rams days later when Stafford returned and he was signed to the Seahawks practice squad.

He now could get a start on Sunday against the Texans, becoming the fourth starting quarterback for the Jets in 13 games this season.
