Twitter sounds off on Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher’s legacy
Is there anything better than a healthy dose of Twitter discourse on a Sunday morning? The answer would probably be a resounding “no!” from 247Sports’ Josh Pate.
The host of Late Kick Live and the Late Kick Podcast may have inadvertently created a new segment called “Defend the head coach” with his latest tweet over the weekend. As Texas A&M looks to rebound from a 5-7 campaign last year, the 2023 campaign will be a must-watch for a number of reasons.
Of course, there’s the anticipated leap that an Aggies defense, which ranked top 25 in defensive scoring last season, will make in the fall. There’s the highly publicized addition of quarterback guru Bobby Petrino as offensive coordinator. And of course, there’s the promising potential of an offense highlighted by quarterback Conner Weigman and rising star receiver Evan Stewart.
But all those narratives pale in comparison to one thing: Jimbo Fisher’s job security. So naturally, Pate tossed an alley-oop icebreaker question for Twitter to respond to, and boy did they have some things to say:
What is your opinion of Jimbo Fisher?
— Josh Pate (@LateKickJosh) June 18, 2023
From a rational train of thought, there are a couple of things that come to mind, personally, when thinking of Jimbo Fisher.
There’s Jimbo the head coach that led Florida State to a national title in 2013. And of course, there’s Jimbo the recruiter that hauled in the best recruiting class ever during the Aggies’ 2022 cycle. Don’t forget Jimbo who is 3-0 in bowl games as head coach in Aggieland.
But does the Twittersphere agree with those logical takes? Spoiler alert: not even close!
Check out some of the best responses to Pate’s question below, which range across the spectrum and of course include more than a few certified haters:
An 83-23 record, 78.3 winning percentage, and a National Championship equals fluke???
FSU success was a fluke.

Who, Jimbo or (soon-to-be-former) Phoenix Suns PG Chris Paul?
Old. Washed. Needs help

Lack of offensive ingenuity was apparent last season, hence hiring Bobby Petrino as OC
From the outside, it appears that he’s unwilling to change his offense, sometimes to the detriment of his team, and perhaps needs pare down the complexity/play sheet.

Jimbo enters a pivotal 2023 season, no one can dispute that
He needs to win more than 8 games this year then I’ll weigh in. Hopefully Bobby helps

You can't take away Jimbo's track record in recruiting, and now it's time to cash in on that vaunted '22 class
He is a terrific recruiter and, at one point was the hardest working coach in the game. Once he achieved success, he hadn't had the drive he once had. He is currently an above average D1 coach cashing in on a top-tier paycheck.

Have fun with that QB situation over in Tuscaloosa
One trick pony: get a crazy-good QB to win a national title for you and ride that for a decade.

Of all the things to criticize Jimbo about...feels like a wasted tweet?
Not the most charismatic person to have an $85 million contract

Don't hate the player, hate the game!
You mean the guy that went to a Div III school for his senior year, dunked on everyone, was Div III player of the year, then coached under Bobby & Terry Bowden as well as Nick Saban, led FSU to natty, and had the #1 recuiting class ever? Respect.
Do I like him? Nope. 🤣

Never been closer to the mountaintop, but that means backing it up with results on the field
Pros:
He has raised our brand on the national level
Recruiting in the best place it's been nationally
Competitive in big games
Cons: Sans 2020 not enough on field success
Like Pate said it's your turn on the fieldWe've never fulfilled potential, but we've never been closer

Avengers: Endgame is a Top-5 MCU film, no doubt about it

At least Jimbo got the job done when he made it to the championship game

The recruiting momentum has been at a high since Jimbo arrived, but it's about translating to wins on the field
When you look at the progression the program made from Sumlin to Jimbo in the recruiting department, you can see a change. Unfortunately, the improvement in recruiting hasn't exactly transferred to onfield results. It could be the BASthere is always hope that this is the year.

A rare objective take seen in the wild!
He deserves all the credit for what he accomplished at FSU. And he deserves all the skepticism for what he HASN’T accomplished at A&M.

Handing the reigns of the offense to Bobby Petrino should be a game changer for 2023
used to be an offensive guy but he’s too stuck in his ways to realize times have changed. he’s a great game manger/recruiter/head coach, so if his new role is truly that then i think petrino might just revive his career.

It begs the question: if the Aggies were to move off Jimbo, who out there is remarkably better?
A top 12 (#branding) coach in college football depending on metrics, and if Texas A&M moves on from him, the amount of “proven upgrade coaches” who will actually move schools (IE, Saban, Dabo, Smart, etc not moving), is a very small and short list.
