Tuscaloosa area high school football quarterbacks to watch during the 2023 season

The Alabama high school football season will start with Week 0 just under two weeks away. Here are some of the top quarterbacks in the Tuscaloosa area to know before opening week.

TyQuan Simon

Aliceville, Sr.

Why chosen: Simon was a dominant receiver for the Aliceville squad last year and is now taking over as quarterback. He finished with 1,062 total yards last year along with 589 yards receiving and 12 TDs in 2022.

Kai Young

American Christian, Jr.

Why chosen: Coming off a season-ending broken collarbone in 2022, Young has gained 20 pounds in the weight room this offseason. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal caller serves as a leader for ACA and has a ton of upside coming into this season.

David McNeil

Central, Sr.

Why chosen: McNeil is coming off a big season for the Falcons and is expected to be a big name for them this season.

Jace Neel

Gordo, Jr.

Why chosen: Neel will be the quarterback at Gordo this year after playing safety in 2022. His playing style resembles that of Caden Creel.

Bryson Kimbrough

Hillcrest, Jr.

Why chosen: Kimbrough took over for an injured Ethan Crawford last year. In three games, he threw for five TDs and one interception.

Xander Bradford

Lamar County, Sr.

Why chosen: The reigning two-time All-County, All-Conference and All-Region returning starter passed for 1,890 yards last year. He holds an offer from Bethel College and also is an All-State baseball player.

Joshua Harris

North River Christian, Sr.

Why chosen: Harris was the 2022 NRCA offensive player of the year. He is a dual-threat quarterback with a high football IQ, great arm strength and accuracy.

Rowdy Christensen

Northridge, Jr.

Why chosen: This 6-foot, 165-pound gun slinger led Northridge's passing attack last season. He holds an offer from Central Michigan University.

Edwin Merriweather

Paul Bryant, Sr.

Why chosen: Merriweather is entering his second year starting as quarterback for the Stampede. He finished the 2022 season with 780 yards passing and 11 TDs. He also ran for 120 yards and one TD.

Preston Lancaster

Tuscaloosa Academy, Jr.

Why chosen: Lancaster is coming off his sophomore season where he threw 165 passes for 2,327 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also was named to the 3A-AISA All-State Honorable Mention list in 2022. He had a great summer and is expected to do big things for the Knights this season.
